Dean Paschal’s Short Story “Moriya.
Question 1: Select an adjective or two from below that best describes your reaction to Dean Paschal’s short story “Moriya.” Tell us why you chose the adjective using textual exemplification (quote) to support your contention.
The short story “Moriya” is very important since it describes a “mechanically minded” boy. I was so intrigued to discover the boy’s personality. I, therefore, realized that his nature is fascinating and has many qualities that make him appear different from the other characters. For instance, “he is a bit too quick to appreciate and understand.” He fell in love with a doll within a short period. This is because he was alone during adolescence.
His character of being a “mechanically minded: boy is shown when his mother says that the girls in his class were friendly to him and he was not interested in any fourteen-year-old girl. This boy, who was a teenager, could create his world and it real for himself. This story is so important since, it explains how “mechanically minded” teenagers can be influenced by their environment, which could be deep and appreciate the things they possess though “scary at times” due to their imagination.
Question 2: This whole exercise is useless if you do not carefully read the entire work. Point to another passage that also captured your attention and tell us why.
In this passage; “it was the most unnatural looking of her, her eyes on the floor, her neck on the process of turn” it is the real picture, we see might see it in our lives, I believe that the author is talking about the real person, and felt how sensitive he is and how imaginary is his character. The boy was treating the doll as a real individual. To see a person, you know in that picture, it means that he was engaged with her and treated her as a real person.
Question 3: Comment on A CLASSMATE’S POST, preferably someone who selected a different adjective for question one.
On my point of view, I believe that this story is shocking too. The things happening in the story makes me get shocked more. I felt like the story had to reflect on the reality in a way that, a lot of things could happen on other peoples’ lives that we cannot even believe them.
Question 4: After you finish Moriya read the Paschal interview. Does Dr. Paschal enlighten you (shed any new light) about his story with what he has to say in this interview?
First of all, Moriya’s story concerning his life is so inspired in a way that, he learned from his mother something so amazing, that writing is a hard task, and that fiction is so severe. This makes me think that there are vital lessons from his fiction story that I have to figure out what they are. One important thing is that I require these tips in my lifetime as a student. These are; to write anything that comes on my mind immediately as the author says; “absolutely I rewrite endlessly.”
