Diary of a Medical Mission Trip
In the case of a disaster, people need to find the means to take care of patients in the best means possible. Nursing intervention is a practice that is done on a patient so that they can reach their set health goals. There are several levels of nursing interventions such as primary, secondary and tertiary prevention. The levels are dependent on the stage that the patent is in. The standards have different levels of activity. This paper is a discussion of the three significant levels of nursing interventions based on a student’s diary of a medical trip.
Primary prevention involves all the steps taken to void the onset of an infection. Based on the diary of the student, the best measures are to prevent the contamination of the wounds that the patients have (Coolbrandt et al, 2018). More clean water should be provided to clean the injuries as well as the doctors who handle the patients. In addition to that, clean bandages and wound dressing should be provided. The dressing should also be changed regularly to promote sanitary condition. Apart from that, the patients should be advised to avoid dirty places which may worsen the wounds.
Secondary prevention entails the measures that are taken to diagnose illnesses earlier and aid in prompt treatment of a disease or infection. In the case of the student, the patients who have infections should be taken into the hospital where they are monitored regularly. The wounds that have been infected should also be taken through constant dressing and treatment to quicken the process of healing. Besides, the patients who begin showing signs of infection in wounds such as swelling and redness should be treated with extra caution to avoid more severe infection.
Tertiary prevention involves taking care of the people who have been diagnosed with a medical condition (Molin et al, 2018). In the Haiti Earthquake, the doctors should deal with the people who have been seen to have broken limbs, infected wounds, impairment and diseases in several ways. The first one is therapy to encourage them, especially in cases when the patient has developed terminal disability due to injury. They should also treat the wounds that have been infected with more care and caution to make sure that the patients heal. They could also train the patients on the right means to dress and treat an infection. They may use the skills to help each other or other patients when they heal. In conclusion, nursing interventions are all aimed at healing a patient. It depends on the stage that the patient is in, as seen in the explanation above.
