Discussion post #4: Segmented Assimilation
Segmented assimilation work in such a way that different immigrant groups assimilate into different segments of the society. In this case, the various immigrants’ groups choose a segment of the society to associate with and assimilate. After the integration of the immigrants to the local group, there is usually an exchange in culture, and this can take the form of either the resident culture having their culture dominant or the immigrant group having their culture dominate that of the local group. In other words, segmented assimilation brings about acculturation, with this taking a more diversified approach as a result of the many groups involved in the respective segments. The concept of segmented assimilation is different from early migration whereby the various segments of the society chose to preserve their culture, and this was as a result of respect for cultural heritage.
According to Portes and Zhoue, the groups that are most at risk for downward assimilation are the disadvantaged. This category of persons faces challenges such as low parental human capital, experience negative modes of incorporation, and have a history of unstable or broken families. Last but not least, I think the immigration in the Ellis Island wave that happened roughly between 1880 and 1920 matched the segmented patterns that they describe, as a mix in culture was easy during this time, leading to various segmented patterns..
