Discussion Post: Employee Satisfaction
In any company or industry, a good manager understands that satisfied employees are loyal and productive. If the employees are not satisfied with the conditions at the work environment, an employer should recognize that and work on improving the state. A while back while I was working at a certain shipping company, my work schedule was irregular, which left me strained and overworked with no extra pay. I felt so annoyed with how the work schedule was being run, and even after I went home, I still felt displeased with my work. The irregular schedules affected my performance since I could hardly plan effectively, not knowing the period I was supposed to work the following day or week. The company would have stipulated a clearly-defined work schedule for everyone and also a policy requiring for all overtime to be paid accordingly. This way, I could have been able to plan well and remain motivated to work for extra hours knowing very well that I would get paid.
Employee satisfaction deals with establishing whether workers and the needs, as well as their desires, fulfilled accordingly. Research has shown that employee fulfilment remarkably influences employee motivation, positive morale, and goal achievement at the places of work. Employee satisfaction mostly depends on various factors including respecting all employees, offering frequent worker recognition, empowering workers, providing above-average gains and compensation, offering worker perks and organizational activities, and a positive administration, with an effective system of goals, expectations, as well as measurements. Additionally, employees value flexible work hours in order to balance between work and family, among other commitments (Heathfield, 2019). Personally, my priorities as an employee are working under a flexible and clearly defined work schedule, getting paid for all my work, and having good connections with all employees. The emotion I experienced discouraged me from giving the company my all, hence poor performance.
