Do the Right Thing First
Before my speech, I’d like to have you imagine this situation. You are going to have an important interview concerned maybe with your future university or your future career, and asked to make a presentation. You want to do things perfectly, so you search on the internet: How to make a magnificent presentation. How to preform well during an interview, etc. However, the deadline is near, and you’re pressed for time. The more you want to do things right, the more messed up it seems to be. So, at the end of the day, you just end up with a not-too-bad presentation plan.
So, here’s what I’m trying to talk about: Should you do the right things, or should you do things right. It’s a no brainer that you should be doing both, you want to do the right things and you want to do them perfectly. But the reality is that in practice, the situation just doesn’t always work out to be the case, and typically, you and I would have to choose one or the other.
Regardless of your preference, I consider it the most important that you should be giving priority to doing the right things versus doing things right.
Everyone wants to do things right, to do things perfectly, but some people just don’t have the time to do that, or they may struggle to do wrong things right, since doing things right could be very hard, and distracting from our daily life. But if you focus on doing the right things even if they’re not so great or not so satisfying, you’ll still get farther than the people who are focused on perfecting before moving on to the next steps.
Just like the situation I mentioned at the beginning. You spend all your time seeking perfection, but at the end of the day, you don’t get much in return. But if you just focus on preparing it, and concentrate on doing the right things, you’ll get a lot more than that. At the end of the day, it’s all about doing the right things that will get you a lot farther than seeking perfection.
Furthermore, if you just focus on doing things right, you’ll probably miss a good chance. For instance, you see people who are just to shy to approach someone they find attractive, and instead of saying hello, they’re busy trying to find the perfect thing to say, before they realize the opportunity disappears.
Indeed, it’s beyond dispute that we should seek perfection, do things right, but there’s definitely a time and opportunity for that. However, in terms of prioritizing strategy and decision-making, what I’m saying here is to keep it simple and focus on doing the right things. In conclusion, if you want to do the right things, you’ll have to set a specific outcome you expect, and do the things that will lead you towards the outcome. So the next time when you’re a little bit confused, and unsure what to do next, frame your answer from the perspective of what’s the right thing you should be doing at that time.
Do the right tings first, and you’ll be effectively efficient? Thanks for listening.
