 effects of divorce

The more significant challenge of the Chan family is that the divorce of Mr. and Mrs. Chan cause families to face the family crisis and become a dysfunctional family.

One of the effects of divorce is reduced the interaction and communication between the family members was less. Mr. and Mrs. Chan thought Tung-tung was too small to understand the problem what they were facing and did not know how to explain to her and Tung-tung did not understand the situation of the family recently. The expectation between Tung-tung and her parents were different and without the communication. She becomes emotional, unable to express her emotions appropriately; she performed acting out unreasonable behaviour. After the observation of Tung-tung and have an interview with Mrs. Chan, the presenting problem of Tung-tung was that she cried a lot in the home, even at the school. When the teacher or Dora asked, she just cried and was not willing to tell. Mrs. Chan could not tolerate and failed to understand the meaning behind why Tung-tung kept crying every day. She only thought that Tung-tung’s behaviour was unreasonable and intolerable. The relationship between Tung-tung and her mother deteriorates due to communication problems. These showed that they have failed to show concern, support and appreciation for family members.

They did not have the right amount of interaction and communication to try to resolve difficulties in family relationships. Mr. and Mrs. Chan had arguments over trivial matters within a few months ago. And chan’s family did not arrange any family activity and family time together, involving both parents in the past few months. Although Mr. Chan was fond of Tung-tung and willing to spend a holiday together, he still has the long workhours job that Mr. Chan would not have the time to spend with Tung-tung or have the family time.

The changes have taken place in the family structure and role responsibilities among the Chan family. While Mr. and Mrs. Chan decided to divorce and Mr. Chan moving out, Mrs. Chan goes part-time job. And she would visit mothers-in-law when Tung-tung is at school or in the centre. Having the past-time to fulfil the living need of the family, although Mrs. Chan could not mention the solution of financial matters. As Mrs. Chan was born up Mr. Chan role, she used her power in the family to restrict Tung-tung’s connection with her father, and also manages her conversations with her husband, focusing on Tung-tung’s schooling matters and financial matters because of the uncomfortable feeling when connect with Mrs. Chan and the concern of the Tung-tung’s feeling.
