In this class, I was required to find a Mentor. Her role was to guide me trough out this semester with her leadership skills. My mentor shocked me with how much she knows as a leader. At the end of the semester, I presented a project with the intention of bringing out skills I learned throughout the semester. This project kind of help me share a little bit about my responsibility at work as a supervisor, and the challenge I face as a leader. For instance, how to handle conflict, ethical issues at the work place. According to AACN as a member of a healthcare team, baccalaureate graduates will understand and use quality improvement concepts, processes, and outcome measures (p.13). One of the interesting point of my homework was to use creativity to bring out some of the responsibility nurses have been in the position of leadership. With my ENTJ type of personality, sometime I can be contagious with my optimism, my energy, and my ambitious, because we are born to take the lead. Reflection
My project definitely relates to AACN Essential. It takes a lot of skills to be a good leader. Some of the skills are critical thinking, transparency, honest, patience, organized, integrity, open-minded, and passionate. These skills will only help a leader to a productive outcome and good patient care. Essential II, says that Baccalaureate graduates will be skilled in working within organizational and community arenas and in the actual provision of care by themselves and/or supervising care provided by other licensed and non licensed assistive personnel (AACN, p.13). A leader trough his good critical thinking, makes a difference when it comes to communication, assessment, and care for the patient as a whole. This is the reason why Baccalaureate nursing graduates are distinguished by their abilities to identify, assess, and evaluate practice in care delivery models that are based in contemporary nursing science and are feasible within current cultural, economic, organizational, and political perspectives (AACN, p.13). Baccalaureate nursing, do prepare us for a life at the managerial level. Because today I can take charge without being scare, at work; meaning I am prepared for that role. One of the thing that makes my job easy is the slogan “respect Me”. My success in leadership comes from the fact that I respect my patients, my peers, like I respect myself, this message speaks loud, and allow my relationship with patients smooth, also create trust between my patient and me. Thus demonstrate leadership and communication skills to effectively implement patient safety and quality improvement initiatives within the context of the inter-professional team (AACN, p.14)
