Employees’ motivation

Employees’ motivation plays a crucial role in human resource management and the successful growth of an organization. Employees’ motivation is, therefore, the urge and inherent enthusiasm by employees to work towards accomplishing a given task for the success of an organization. As a business owner, there are various methods that I can employ to motivate the employees in my business. It is, therefore, essential to discuss the styles that I can use to motivate my employees.

Using scientific management

By implementing Fredrick Taylor’s method of motivating employees, the workers in my business will increase productivity. The solution proposed by Taylor is that employers should scientifically study how efficient things can be done in an organization, determine the best way to do the tasks, and then teach the employees the methods.  By using this method in my business, the employees will be able to perform their duties using the best approach and tools. This best practice will lead to employees’ motivation hence saving time and increase productivity (Motivating Employees, pg 243).

Using Maslow’s hierarchy of needs

Maslow’s hierarchy of needs explains that people’s needs motivate them to work satisfactorily.  The employees are always working hard to satisfy their basic needs, such as shelter, food, and clothing. The other needs that drive the employees according to Moslow are safety needs such as the need to feel secure at workplaces, and at home, social needs, esteem needs, self-respect needs, and need for self-actualization.  Therefore, to motivate the employees in my business, I will ensure that there is a pleasant working environment. The right working environment in a company may include reliability, honesty, social contribution, unity, safety, quality service, dependability, and inclusivity. It is essential to appreciate the employees, regardless of their level at work, their importance in the business. Therefore I will always appreciate the employees for their services and duties in the company and enhance their morale by showing them that without them, the company could not be in a good position (Motivating Employees, pg 245).

Using personalizing motivation

It is essential to consider every employee individually because of their cultural and belief differences. As a business owner, I will motivate the employees on a personal level by appreciating their culture, religion, and what they believe. Religious and cultural biasing in a business organization lowers the working morale of the employees it should therefore be highly discouraged. The productivity and motivation of a worker can be encouraged by recognizing every employee’s beliefs and appreciating their achievements (Motivating Employees, Pg 256).

Using Herzberg motivation-hygiene theory

Herzberg’s theory urges that two- dimensional factors influence the attitude of people towards work. People at work are either satisfied or dissatisfied. The motivation factors include the need for recognition, advancement, responsibility, the need for growth, and self-actualization. These factors work to increase employee job satisfaction.

On the other hand, hygiene factors refer to the need to avoid unpleasant issues at work. These factors include the relationship with the workers, company policies, interpersonal relationships, wages and salaries, and the working conditions. Hygiene factors work to reduce job dissatisfaction among the employees. Job dissatisfaction ensues if these factors deteriorate a workplace. Motivation factors are extrinsic to the job, while hygiene factors are intrinsic to the task.

By treating employees fairly

Fair treatment to employees increases their motivation to work. As the owner of the business, I must ensure that I treat the employees using equal measures and avoid discrimination. The Equity theory shows how fairness affects employees’ willingness to work. Employees always compare their input and outputs to other employees occupying the same position, and if they do not see justice, they tend to reduce their efforts towards work. It is therefore vital to ensure that there is a fair payment to all the employees, equal access to resources, similar appreciation, and equitable allocation and delegation of duties (Motivating Employees, pg 252)

In conclusion, employees’ motivation is the most critical tool for increasing the productivity of an organization. Providing the right working environment to the employees, fair payment, inclusivity, recognition, and the correct working equipment are the key factors that motivate the employees.  It is, therefore, very crucial to uphold these factors in a business to ensure the best outcome from the employees. Poor relationships between the management and the employees, racism, gender discrimination, and poor working conditions lower the motivation of employees, and therefore every organization should avoid them.
