Essay on Evidence-based practice (EBP)
Evidence-based practice (EBP) is an interdisciplinary approach to solve problems based on evidence from patient values, research and clinicians’ expertise in making decisions on patients care. The course on evidence-based practice has transformed my perception of evidence-based practice and enlightened me on how complex it can get. As a result, I learnt that apart from the process just being a seven-step process to solving problems or answering questions, it still constitutes the elements of primary and secondary as well as quantitative and quantitative techniques.
Reflecting on evidence-based practice, I able to evaluate the current primary research and apply the concepts in my nursing practice. For instance, presently I can understand the importance of identifying research with relevancy, the research should, therefore, apply to the addressed concerns and the believability of data must get regarded as valid and from credible sources. Therefore relevancy and believability of data are two essential aspects when carrying out research since sometimes it gets difficult to understand research that meets the ideas of a problem or having an incomplete data or even data from non-credible sources. Again, during my nursing practice, I learnt the difference between quality improvement (QI) and research. Regarding QI, it is a more specific research method that relates to a local unit, department or an institution where the aim is operating on enhancing the systems and processes within the particular place. On the other hand, research is universal and systemic. The notion is that the research intends to get it generalized and applied beyond the local level and on a larger scale which gets done through research development, testing and assessment. For instance, I found quality improvement data helpful, especially during my search for resources as it assists in identifying the responsibilities of the local department in solving current concerns.
Primary research and secondary research get performed to meet specific needs. Every research method, modern or traditional, is under one of two categories: primary or secondary research. Primary research is new research collected for the first time. On the contrary, secondary research involves the use of data already existing through pieces of literature. Primary research methods include observations, surveys and interviews. Therefore, an author of secondary research interprets an already done primary research; hence some information can be lost in the process.
My experience of researching this program assisted me in achieving excellence in evidence-based practice as i am no longer in orientation. Again, I have begun joining various hospital committees to acquire more skills to improve my department and the whole facility. Furthermore, I have a better understanding of how to get research data relevant to topics of study.
