Ensuring that a school has properly integrated its extra-curricular activities with the school curriculum, goes a long way in enabling the students to discover and develop their full potential.

The Education Bureau in cooperation with other bodies such as the Sports Federation and Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, have committed themselves in providing diversifies sporting activities within the youth (Janssen & Leblanc, 2015, p. 2). The bureau aims at developing the students’ character and leadership training through sports. Since sports promote the students’ personal development by not only developing their interest but also providing them with opportunities to work and improve their interest (Janssen & Leblanc, 2015, p. 3). Finally, through sports, the bureau aims at reducing the rates of truancy as the sports activities reduce monotony making school life interesting.

The bureau has as a result implemented strategies to effectively promote sports in the school curriculum. One key role of the Education Bureau in developing sports in schools involves the motivation of students to participate in the sporting activities. The bureau has partnered with various National Sports Associations and implemented a School Sports Programme (Audit Commission., 2014, p. 1). The programme offers tailor-made sporting activities for students in primary and secondary school. The exercises offered, empower the students to learn new games while developing their basics skills through volunteering in sport administration services.

The bureau also provides the student’s mentors and coaches for the various sporting activities. Through the partnership with the Hong Kong Sports Institute, the Institute acts as a delivery  specialist for superior games administrations, including the administration of superior athlete training program, instructing of trainees’, both preparing and training of junior and pre-elite top teams (Audit Commission., 2014, p. 2). The institute offers coaches and mentees to the schools where they go and advice the students on all matters related to a given sport.  Moreover, students’ who show great potential are recruited to the junior teams where they are trained and provided with the opportunity to compete countrywide.

School sports not only offers students an avenue to develop their skills and abilities but also helps their character formation. Through the close partnership of the Bureau of Education, schools and other sports Association, the bureau has been effective in performing its role in promoting sports in school through motivating and mentoring. However, there is still much that needs to be done to ensure that the culture of participating actively in sports amongst the youth is developed.  The recommendations for the bureau in promoting sports is that it can involve the students more by developing sports clubs in all school institutions.  Offer finances in managing the clubs and provide an avenue where the various clubs can meet and compete with each other.
