What is Bamboo?

Bamboo is the multifaceted plant that plays a significant role in textile, furniture, buildings, and food source. It is the most sustainable wood and has more strength than other materials like mahogany, hardwood, and cedar. It mostly grows in a temperate climate like desert or Creekside and riverside. It is also found in many tropical areas. There are over 1400 types of bamboo found all over the world.

Almost every part of the bamboo is beneficial; let’s start from the young shoot that is used in cuisine. Above all, it also releases a significant portion of oxygen to the environment. It is also used to make a biodegradable bamboo fibre that has a cotton-like softness that is used to make breathable fabric.

How does it grow?

Bamboo is the invasive plant, and it grows where it finds a place. However, we all hear that bamboo is the fastest growing plant.

The initial point of bamboo growth is from seed. The seed grows and develops into rootstalk. The rootstalk grows and form roots and root buds. Then, the buds form the shoots.

Well, the growth of bamboo above ground starts from the spring. It starts to produce new canes in the spring and shoots get out from the soil. It continues for about 60 days. In these 60 days’ limbs and leaves are produced. One more thing, in the growth period of 60 days, the bamboo completes its height and diameter. After the 60 days, no growth happens in height and diameter.

It does not undergo secondary growth. However, simple foliage produces every year. The life period of cane is of about 10 years. The bamboo plants expand their roots by harvesting the energy from already existing plants. The expansion of root structure produces the new plants. In this way, the bamboo invades fast.

Well, bamboo takes about 3 years to establish, and after that, the new shoots continue to grow. The different species take different time to reach their maximum height. The lifespan of individual cane is about 10 years, and after that, it dies. The nutrients are provided to the bamboo colony.

Why is Bamboo Good for the Environment?

We all know that with the increase in population, we are depleting the natural resources to fulfil the basic need of a home. In this scenario, we are also harming our environment. Well, bamboo is giving an advantage to the environment. There are the following advantages: –

As we have discussed, every part of the plant is useable. So, after harvesting, there is very little waste. It not only enriches the soil but also gives us the wood for furniture and buildings.

Carbon dioxide is very harmful to us. It is increasing the temperature of earth day by day. Bamboo is very helpful; it absorbs greenhouse gases.

It is environment-friendly as it does not need any chemical fertilizer for growth. Cotton like crops need more fertilizers. But, bamboo grows on its own. It also provides soft cloth for the fabric.

Bamboo is replacing the need for wood almost in every circle like fabrics, papers, lumber, furniture, and flooring. So we can save more woody plants and protect forests.

Bamboo enriches the soil and also controls soil erosion by strong roots.
