Evidence-Based Practice in the Workplace
Article Summary
The article “Effectiveness of organizational infrastructures to promote evidence‐based nursing practice” by Flodgren et al. (2012) delves into how organizational infrastructures help foster evidence-based practice (EBP) in nursing. The authors assert that midwives and nurses are the majority in the clinical health labor force, and their role is critical to healthcare delivery. According to Flodgren et al. (2012), if nurses embrace EBP in their routine clinical practice, the healthcare sector would likely achieve improved healthcare outcomes. The authors conducted their study by exploring articles from various research engines such as MEDLINE, CINAHL, and IBECS (Flodgren et al., 2012). They also used midwives, nurses, and health visitors from various healthcare organizations as the study subjects. In their study, the authors established that organizational infrastructures are pertinent in enhancing EBP at an organizational level. However, although the authors relied on extensive research from published and unpublished studies, they excluded several studies since they were illegible in the study design. Thus, Flodgren et al. (2012) concluded that healthcare organizations and policy-makers must embrace funding besides conducting well‐designed studies to promote EBP in nursing.
This EBP research supports my practice in various ways as I also understand the essence of embracing evidence-based practices in healthcare. Notably, the health sector has achieved significant growth and improved patient outcomes through evidence-based nursing, which has helped address various diseases and infections (Connor et al., 2023). Similarly, the research supports my practice by demonstrating the importance of effective decision-making in healthcare through EBP. From this research, I have learned that incorporating EBP in my nursing practice could enhance better healthcare outcomes regarding patient treatment and disease control. Therefore, nurses should utilize the existing infrastructures in their workplace to incorporate EBP in their routine clinical practice to achieve improved healthcare outcomes, especially at an organizational level.
