Explain the value of reversal designs (ABA designs) in single-case research.
ABA design is the process of establishing a baseline condition that seeks to introduce experimental treatment. In this baseline condition, no experimental variable is added, and later the process returns to the baseline. Furthermore, participants receive treatment (B) and then return to the baseline condition (A). The ABA design usually allows participants to observe behavior before treatment, during treatment, and after treatment.
However, there is a need to use an ABA design. ABA designs are made in a single-subject type whose primary purpose is to observe changes in every individual. The exhibited changes may be the actual results of the treatment. Moreover, there are some essential characteristics of single-subject designs. The first thing is that APA designs allow researchers to acquire repeated measurements, thus establishing consistent patterns in behaviors. Secondly, the designs allow researchers to obtain accurate data on the baseline and treatment conditions. Further, ABA designs let researchers record consistent measurements under controlled conditions. Lastly, these designs allow a detailed look into single variables influencing behavior.
