FAT CITY Video Analysis

Introduction

In the video “F.A. T CITY: A look back, a look aheada conversation about special education,” Richard D. Lavoie discuses suggestions and concerns about the education system concerning the students with learning disabilities. The analysis looks at some key factors being discussed in the video. “What is fairness and how it looks in the classroom,” “why does Lavoie say about assumptions concerning the students” and “particularly the key concepts that are particularly meaningful.”  These are some of the questions that will be discussed in the paper.

Question 1.

Using Richard D. Lavoie’s definition, he, therefore, defines fairness as “everyone gets what he or she needs.”  He meant that one student in each classroom might have only three sheets based on the homework, while another student may get six sheets of the homework, according to Richard Lavoie. However, the student having six sheets of homework shall be challenged and also the one with three sheets. If the student having three sheets essentially has six sheets to handle, it perhaps might have discouraged them as well as the results definitely handling the homework may probably be none at all. Therefore, he advises teachers and parents to meet the needs of every student.

Question 2

Richard D. Lavoie considers assumptions as blindness. One may assume that due to the fact that students have bad behavior or do not seem interested in the activity, they are actually bad students. Lavoie says that sometimes students might have a particular disability, which makes them behave in a particular way. Also, sometimes students will be less interested due to the activity being taught is not necessary for meeting the requirements of the student. Moreover, Lavoie discusses the assumptions because, as human beings, we tend to judge others by their behavior or their looks. He says that it is a mistake that teachers sometimes do make while educating their students. Also, his discussions are because of teachers and parents that assume as well as they do not get to understand what the students might be going through.

Question 3

Fairness was one of the concepts that were meaningful to me. However, it makes me feel so bad while talking about fairness due to the fact that I do feel like the students respond very differently if everybody does not receive an equal amount. Sometimes do look at it from the students’ standpoint. Although, how Lavoie gives the description of fairness is that all the students’ requirements would be meant. Also, I think this is a significant concept due to the fact that in case one has a child who is extremely smart, he or she is nor required to prevent them by having them do the same amount of work as the other students. One is required to challenge the student by giving them work that is based on their grade level. So, for instance, your student is in the fifth-grade level, and from the second grade, he or she is provided with fifth-grade assignments to read.

Moreover, the same applies to a student who is behind being given work that meets the grade level they can handle. And one still needs to bring the student to their grade level of work as well as not necessarily just having work that is gone to being doable. This shall keep the students involved and provide them with confidence within themselves. Another concept that I found meaningful to me is the assumptions. When one is teaching, he or she has several assumptions concerning the students within one’s classroom.

Being a teacher, I don’t think one should allow one’s assumptions to change his or her thought process on the student. I think one should make sure he or she has got to know every student as well as their background to truly know how to teach them. Lastly, the other meaning concept which stood out to me was the dumb or bad condition. Actually, I had not known that when students behave badly, they act out by not looking dumb from the front of the class. It, therefore, changed my mindset based on the environment of a classroom. Again, even when he talked about the student requiring attention. I think bad and attention or dumb all might be one at the same thing. It is due to the fact that when students are acting out, they cannot understand any of the material, or they actually are just seeking attention.

Additionally, while I was in the classroom shadowing a certain teacher, she told me that I should not provide particular students’ attention. So, after watching the video, I know what to do in order to assist these kinds of students. Also, I think the entire concepts should come in handy while I begin teaching. It is like all that I thought I knew could never be compared to the video. Again, it would probably alter my strategies of teaching; it would help me become more patient as well as meeting the requirements of all the students. To conclude, the video was significantly helpful and would prepare me in the future to become a great teacher.
