Lesson Plan Analysis

The lesson plan chosen has the title, “Example of a good lesson plan.” Its source is online at file:///C:/Users/user/Desktop/Ex_Good_Lesson_Plan.pdf

The lesson plan involves planning and structuring the active learning of students. The lesson includes both students and trainees, where students have no existing knowledge like the trainees. The students plan their lessons in class while the tutor observes them. The students are required to produce a draft lesson plan and later a lesson plan for microteaching. The tutor aims at teaching the students through groups. Moreover, the tutor uses visual aids, for example, handouts and PowerPoint presentations. There is a session where students would listen and speak in pairs.

The strengths of this lesson plan are the engagement of the students where they would learn and speak in pairs. Here, the teacher would not use a lot of time in tutoring but used visuals, for example, PowerPoint presentations and handouts. The students would also work together in groups of three and share some information and ideas they had with each other. While working in groups, the students would draft their lesson plans and have them checked by the tutor, thus ensuring that the students did the right thing before working on the final lesson plan. I liked the visuals in the form of PowerPoint presentations and handouts as these would give the students a chance to have a look at some of the examples of lesson plans, strengthening their skills.

The strengths I found in this lesson plan are the random pairing and grouping the students in threes. During the pairing and grouping, there is no consideration of special needs students. The students are just in pairs, where the teacher requires them to speak and ask questions. There is no accommodation for peer tutoring, which would accommodate the special needs students. Furthermore, in the groups of three where students work together, there is no consideration to group the students according to their needs and abilities. The students are also required to draft the lesson plans individually. In case some students had disabilities like slow learning, they would probably have a hard time drafting their lesson plans and eventually face shame and frustrations when the tutor checks their drafts.

The first modification I would suggest for this lesson plan is to consider special needs students. I would recommend that the pair consist of one keen student and a student with special needs. The strong student would assist the special needs student in speaking. The special student would then ask questions as it would be easier for them. In the group of threes, I would also ensure that no group consists of special needs children only. In this case, I would suggest that each group consists of two keen students and one special needs student. In the lesson plan, there is the drafting of the lesson plan and writing the final copy. I would suggest that the groups of three make one copy where the student with special needs engage in drafting, and the keen students make the final copy.

Another modification I would make in this lesson plan is to allocate different times for different students to check out the visual aids, which include power points and handouts. Separating the students into two or three groups would help. In this case, one group would view the PowerPoint and handouts without congestion so that they would rasp every idea. Moreover, the listening and asking questions’ sessions would be students that are more effective if they did it in different segments and at different times. The students would have enough time to ask all the burning questions and to share all ideas through speaking, which would be limited if there was only one segment for the same lesson.
