FootPrinting
Digital reconnaissance can be defined as the process of data gathering on a specific target and the entities they belong to intending to reveal avenues of attack. Performing reconnaissance on yourself or your company helps in identifying the information you need to protect. Conversely, doing reconnaissance on another person or company may reveal numerous avenues of attack. For instance, the United States uses military reconnaissance through the use of satellites and intelligence agencies against their targets to pinpoint avenues of attack. In other terms, footprinting is searching for the location where the company’s footprints can be observed.
Footprinting is crucial to information gathering about stolen things. In this context, digital reconnaissance would be adequate in gathering information about a car stolen in a parking lot. First, accessing the parking lot’s surveillance camera would provide information on the time the vehicle was parked and during the theft. Moreover, surveillance information can produce images for the crime agent and use it with the face recognition process. Back tracing into the building’s system would be a tremendous step in identifying the crime agent. Looking at the records could assist in knowing the individuals who have accessed the building within the crime period. This is only applicable if the organization has digitalized its record-keeping process.
Late-model cars have model numbers that can be remotely tracked. With the model number, digital reconnaissance can gather intelligence on the current location of the vehicle. With access to street surveillance cameras, the exact location and the images of the car can be produced. Moreover, footprinting the building would be advantageous to gather information and assess threats related to the crime. This would not only aid in identifying relevant information about the stolen car but also identify loopholes on security to avoid future incidents of such crimes happening.
