Geronimo’s turning points and their importance
Geronimo turning points
Geronimo was born in 1829 in Gila River which now the Arizona- New Mexico border in United States. He was a grandson of Maco, a chief of the Apache. He resisted the white people colonization from which he was finally caught and arrested and spent some years in prison (Barrett, 20-22). He was a leader as well as a warrior who led his people to fight their enemies. Despite all these challenges Geronimo had several turning points in his life. Some of his turning points are discussed below.
In the years of hostilities in his area his people moved to trade with Mexicans. They were determined to do this to earn their living. At first they traded well with peace with the other groups. They were used to leave the children and women behind to guard their camps when carrying out the trading activity. After some days while in the trading centers, they received news that the Mexicans had attacked their camps hence killing the omen and t children (Barrett, 23-26). The Mexicans destroyed and stole their properties as well as their arms making Geronimo’s people weak. Many people had lost their family members but in the c by the case of Geronimo were very tough for he had lost his mother, wife and children. He was actually hurt by the situation (Barrett and Frederick, 32-34). Geronimo and his people had first to retreat due to the pressure and threat. This hence marked a turning point in the life of Geronimo. He hence decided to deal with the Mexians who were responsible to ensure recovery of his community. Geronimo had to devise good means to solve the problem.
In the year 1848 there was discovery of gold in the land of Apache. This in turn brought many problems to the people of Geronimo. Many white people had to settle in the Apache land. The miners were really brutal and unfriendly to the community hence Geronimo and his people were actually not happy with this kind of behavior (Boscana, 60-63). The white settlers were against and brutally treated the local leaders. Geronimo tried to have good relations with the settlers but this entire bore no fruits hence he and his people had to seek alternative methods to deal with the issue. This was also accompanied by food shortage in the area hence a big threat to the people. Finally Geronimo and the Americans went in to an agreement and the hostilities ceased. It is also after this when Geronimo was arrested and put in trial (Barrett and Frederick, 35-37). There in prison prisoners were brutally treated by the white people but Geronimo was kindly treated. This also marked a turning point in his life.
Impacts of Geronimo’s turning points
After the attack against his people he was determined to deal with the attack and sought more support but this also did not work. This hence resulted to him going ahead to sign peaceful treats with the enemies in order to stop the attacks. This definitely worked and saw the existence of peace among his people and still good health relationship with the Mexians (Boscana, 57-58). After his arrest and jailing he was able to have access of what was actually taking place at the cells. Many prisoners were being mistreated but the case was different on his side. This enabled him to see the Americans as good people to deal with and transact business with for prosperity. These turning points hence helped him to understand some life issues well.
