gilded Age
Lee Chew was the only author who had a different experience when compared to Ida B. Wells-Barnett and George Engel. The three have narrated about the hard times faced by people in America during this time, although for Lee, he managed to earn through his laundry job to the extent of starting a company. For Engel, he reflects the difficulties faced by proletariats, where they are mishandled and punished for airing their grievances. For Ida, his perspective revolved around the challenges experienced by the Negroes, such as being falsely being accused of rape and being lynched or hanged. Engel reflected the issue of being falsely accused and being punished with hanging or years of servitude. For Lee, it was different since he was earning despite facing hard times with miners to the extent of losing his business and moving to another city. He acknowledges the Americans are not bad as painted by the others; he liked them as compared to others who complained about work without adequate payment and being subjected to the slave trade.
The growing racial, ethnic, gender, and economic inequality during the gilded Age was reflected by issues such as the proletariats getting low pay. Despite their effort for better remunerations, they are charged and persecuted in a court of law. The issue of the poor failing to decide for their leaders increased inequality since they were not concerned to improve the situation of the low-income earners in society. Racial discrimination also exists as some of the races perceive themselves as superior to others, evidenced by stereotyping of the negroes as rapists and being subjected to lynching or hanging. The Chinese indulging in the laundry business as a result of low capital compared to Americans. In the case of gender inequality, it is reflected by Ida, where he highlights that a voluntary alliance could not exist between a clouded man and a white woman. It indicates the white women had no right to express their love freely to another man except a white. One of the issues that surprised me most is the issue of corruption that existed at this time, where some people embezzled money while the citizens continued to suffer. Kickbacks were very high in the country at that time as citizens witnessed continued development in New York.
The image demonstrates how many Americans saw the national growing racial and ethnic diversity by many people of different races, begging the woman for permission to enter. The gate limits those who can access the school depending on their ethnicity and race. The image shows those inside furious with those outside both the man and woman. They are not welcoming an indication of anger with them, and this has been reflected in both the documents and videos about the animosity that existed between people. The issue of capitalism has been reflected in how it led to some people becoming very rich, while others continued to suffer and becoming destitute. With the innovation and industry machines led to the laying of employees where some became vulnerable to slaves. The video demonstrates how a few people managed New York using the money they had embezzled in previous years. The perception relates to the video and document since it highlights the challenges the people were experiencing irrespective of their race and ethnicity. Leaders were not assisting their people; they were expected to represent but focused on their issues such as corruption and embezzlement of funds.
