Glass Ceiling
In 1986, two Wall Street Journal correspondents introduced the glass ceiling into the English language. The two journalists were Hymowitz and Schellhardt. The term tends to focus more about women in the workplace. Glass ceiling tend to discuss the unacknowledged barriers that prevent the women from advancing from low positions to top position. Therefore, the glass ceiling has been the topic that has become a leadership labyrinth that hinders women from being promoted to the top ranks and attains their dreams. This unacknowledged belief has resulted from a technical position like the Facebook Company and the Google Company. The thoughts that people have about women owning a top position make the women feel that they are discriminated against and also not valued as workers. More so, for the people to develop a positive attitude towards women’s participation in the workplace, different strategies have to be implemented. The organization should implement a plan that examines an individual performance and take the actions of promoting diversity and inclusion. The program of diversity and inclusion will play a vital role in the organization. Still, extra efforts have to be taken to ensure that women are promoted according to their performance.
Additionally, another strategy that can be used to break the aspect of the glass ceiling in the organization is the hidden bias of training the senior workers in the company to endorse the recruiting of females. The organization needs to develop an active system whereby they can practice the aspect of learning and listen to different views from both males and females in the organization on matters concerning women empowerment. More so, women should be motivated and encourage them to participate in all daily activities. Such motivation will enable them to develop a positive attitude towards the work and adding value to the company. However, we should get rid of the culture believes about women owning a leadership position. Cultural beliefs are an obstacle to women who should be promoted because many men do not obey and listen to female bosses. Besides, both social and cultural ideas should be discussed among the workers and offering behavioral training. It is also essential to make the women understand their benefits of being assigned to the top positions.
Many men expect some conflicts between them and the women bosses. Consequently, such expectations tend to make women task more complex in showing their leadership skills in the workplace. Therefore, women bosses should develop a strong relationship with the employees so that they can know the progress of the company. It is vital to promote women’s leadership because every talent in an organization should be recognized. Education is another tool to encourage women empowerment and ensure that they develop excellent leadership skills. The research has proved that many women do not take technical courses as compared to men. Therefore, the company can develop training courses and educate their female workers to acquire technical skills. This will make them feel that they are valued and considered as part of the organization.
