Global Warming Explained.
Human beings, by virtue of nature, are prone to focus on immediate threats. Climate change, on the other hand, is a continuous long term process caused mainly by human’s way of life as they pursue their various socio-economic activities. Global warming is a persistent increase in the world’s average temperature. The rising temperature is primarily attributed to the greenhouse effects that are caused by rising levels of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases. Discreetly analyzing measures taken to curb the ever continuous climate change experienced in the globe over the various decades, there exists little the world has done to curb climate change. Individuals’ profit-driven motives make it difficult to enhance the various measures taming climate change. Global warming thus remains a nightmare that requires immediate attention so as to salvage the future.
The effects of global warming are severe. According to MacMillan, scientists have agreed that the ever-rising temperature as a result of global warming is the primary cause of frequent droughts, heavy rainfall, and powerful hurricanes that are frequently experienced around the globe. MacMillan further adds, “environmental, economic, and health consequences are likely to occur if current trends continue”. If at all viable measures are not put in place, it means that global warming will significantly disrupt the healthcare system as well as the world’s economies. Countries are now channeling a lot of funds to cater for people who have experienced severe weather conditions like floods and more powerful hurricanes. All this catastrophe is attributed to global warming; as a result, they indirectly affect a country’s economy. Furthermore, the disruption of habitats as a result of global warming like the Alpine Meadows and coral reefs will lead to the extinction of certain animal species. It is a high-time that world leaders take the issue of global warming a viable priority measures that will help address it.
Carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases are the primary causative agents of global warming. In order to mitigate climate, the primary focus should be activities that lead to the release of these toxic gases into the atmosphere (Evans). In order to address this, the United States government, for example, has introduced a law of carbon capping. The federal government sets a cap for the level of carbon dioxide that a company can release into the atmosphere in its jurisdiction. This measure has ensured that companies are not engaging in reckless behavior of emitting carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. According to Evans, rewarding green commuters is also a crucial step towards mitigating climate change. Commuters are encouraged to use public means of transport. This approach has helped in reducing carbon dioxide emissions into the atmosphere since there are few vehicles on roads. Although it is expensive, the transition to renewable sources of energy, which is environmentally friendly, will help curb climate change. Governments and other major capital markets institutions can help finance this venture since it will help in reducing carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere.
Mitigation of climate change will only be achieved if all world nations come together and agree that global warming is a threat, which, if not taken care of, will come to haunt the entire globe in the near future. Just like terrorism, climate change is an equal threat to the world, not unless impeccable measures are put in place to transform the world into using environmentally friendly sources of energy, then global warming cannot be averted. Prolonged drought and heavy flooding will become our daily experience, making the world uninhabitable.
