Graphic Filter Project (Short Analysis Papers)
Short Analysis Papers Write a short analysis paper on a music composition of your choice that uses filtering techniques. (Do not use compositions that have been introduced in lectures.) Try to stay focused on the music and the impact and influence that this audio signal techniques/technologies have on the music. This is a short paper, but organize it in a traditional academic style paper with paragraphs starting with an introduction and ending with a conclusion. – Talk about (not in particular order): Brief biographical information about the composer/artist and historical and background information about the composition. (This should be included in the earlier part of the paper such as the second paragraph.) What are the sound sources of which filters are applied to? Such as a violin, voice, or sawtooth-wave tone.[unique_solution] Explain what changes you are hearing. For example, the piano sound gradually becomes muffled, and its brightness disappears. Can you identify or guess the type of filter used in the composition? The above example is most likely a result of using a low pass filter. Why do you think the composer/artist altered these sounds with filters at the specific locations in the composition? Indicate locations where the use of filters is audible, such as 0:58 – 1:08 and 2:34 – 3:03. List locations that you think important to talk about in your paper, and you do not need to list every single spot where filtering is audible. What does the use of filters in the composition add? Do you think it ruins the piece? Explain why. Things you enjoy and like about the composition. It can be related to the filtering techniques or not. Any other technical and technological elements in the composition that you find interesting. Examples would be the use of an analog synthesizer or a serial music compositional technique on an acoustic piano. – Include a weblink to the music.
