Great Depression Discussion
The great depression underlies a severe worldwide economic disintegration that crushed the United States’ stock market in 1929, resulting in severe impacts in the country (Parrish). Its consequences underlined unemployment of the labor force, fall in productivity, collapse in the banking system, among others(Slide 4). Franklin Roosevelt’s New Deal policy, therefore, juxtaposed the best response to the Great Depression owing to its economic measures that rejuvenated and recessed the country besides restoring the people’s confidence.
Effectiveness of Roosevelt’s Responses to the Great Depression
Roosevelt’s responses to the Great Depression encompassed his New Deal that delved on the recovery and stability of the economy, reformation of economic problems to prevent another depression, and employment and relief to the poor. Its effectiveness was also based on the spheres of restoration of the country’s financial system by introducing new currencies to the country. He also regulated businesses by pumping money into the economy and helping farmers. Similarly, Roosevelt, in the quest to respond to the Great depression, put people into government payrolls and transformation of the country’s landscape through electricity, building dams, ending flood and lifting out poverty in seven states.
How Roosevelt’s Responses Changed the Roles of the Federal Government
Roosevelt’s responses on the role of the Federal government underscored the pushing of the Congress to create social security welfare for the old and job creation for the people. Roosevelt also championed legislation of the second 100 days through old-age pensions, unemployment compensation, and centralization of the banking system. Similarly, through brain trust, Roosevelt drew several reforms that expended the federal government in the domestic affairs and policies instead of the military alone like it did earlier (Puschak). Finally, Roosevelt also pushed for the federal government to formulate vast programs by helping people through hiring and employment through the Civilian Conservation Corps, Work Project Administration and the passage of the Social Security Act, coupled with minimizing wage laws.
