Hidden curriculum
Hidden curriculum implies unofficial or unwritten knowledge, lessons and values that learner gain from the official curriculum. It involves those lessons that were not intended or meant to be in the course. Teachers and educators should be aware of the hidden lessons in a curriculum to ensure that the learners only take what is necessary. Education policymakers argue that hidden lessons are necessary to make the learner complete in their education life. They contain a special part of education that equips learners with unique skills and knowledge that they would need in their future endeavours.
Further, they are reported to result in changes in students’ attitudes, values, and beliefs. It is noted that the teacher must be aware of such hidden lessons so that they can communicate them and model learners to pick the positive ones. The hidden curriculum is, therefore, a normal part of learning.
An ideal curriculum that is good for education should be gender-inclusive. Education programs should consider girls and not only boys. It should also put equal attention to the disabled and exceptional students. A comprehensive syllabus is that which can be used to teach the disabled, normal, girls and boys at the same time. With an inclusive curriculum, marginalized communities, aboriginal students and the poverty-driven households can get equal opportunities.
Most importantly, equitable education curriculum and programs will promote equality, respect and elimination of male-dominated education field. Most countries and Canada inclusive have moved essential steps in creating inclusive systems. Today learners have equal learning opportunities irrespective of their gender, social status, religious and cultural backgrounds and their race. A balanced curriculum and education programs produce intellectual boys and girls in society.
