In week one of the course, the major activities that took place were an introduction to the course. There was a general course overview that acts as a guide for students because they set course goals and create a schedule for the course. After the presentation, we went straight to the 1st chapter of the book into a topic known as the changing face of business. We earnt about operational differences for non-profit and profit organizations. We learned some differences, like profit organizations pay taxes based on income. At the same time, non-profit organizations are not affected by the payment of income tax. We also learned about types of economic systems and how the production factors are distributed. We went slightly into the history of business in Canada and learned more about their business development.
However, we also learned about various trends that create change in today’s business, for example, globalization, diversity, and flexibility. On the last day of the week, we started a topic known as soft skill session, which was presented by students. Week 2, we discussed business ethics and social responsibility. We went deep into strategies for maintaining ethical behavior in organizations. We discussed the roles that business play towards stakeholders, and through the topic, we were able to learn and gain the skill of time management and understand the importance of team building in businesses. Week 3, we went into a topic of economic challenges facing businesses. We learned more about the importance of microeconomics and how to manage and evaluate financial performance in organizations. We gained the skill of stress management and learned how to prepare for tests, without feeling the pressure. Week 4, we discussed the benefits of international trade, challenges that face international trade, and the solutions to those challenges. We gained the skill of writing a report and analyzing case studies. After the test, we discussed how small businesses contribute to the economy. We learned the skill of handling unstable behavior and how to deal with conflict. We also gained knowledge about the role of human resources in an organization, ways to motivate employees, and challenges that labor relations face. We learned the importance of empowerment to employees, how to solve employee conflict, as well as knowing the importance of employee characteristics in the organization. However, at the end of the course, we discussed the features of stock exchanges and the importance of the bank of Canada. Throughout the course, we were able to take tests in between the programs, to test our competence and understanding.
