How Millennials today compare with their grandparents 50 years ago
Today’s millennials are more educated compared to our grandparents. I am pursuing a bachelors, and a high number of fellow millennials are also in universities. An increase in the number of higher education institutions has prompted most students to enrol for degrees. Besides, an increase in unemployment rates has created more value in higher education. Graduates with a bachelor’s degree stand a better chance of securing a high paying job. The high number of educated millennials is different from the one of our grandparents. Only 15% of men and 9% of women had degrees due to fewer number of colleges and universities.
There is a high number of millennial women with a bachelor’s degree than men. 36% of the millennial women have degrees while the number of men stands at 29% (Fry, Igielnik, & Patten, 2018). In my neighborhood, most of the young women have gone to top-class universities. Women have greatly being empowered and allowed to pursue their dreams. They have also been accepted in the male-dominated careers hence inspiring fellow women to follow suit. In our grandparent’s time, only 9% of women had degrees. Women were despised, and their work was only to stay at home and look after their families.
Additionally, more millennial women (71%) are working compared to 40% during our grandparent’s time. This is because they are empowered and educated hence can work in any job. Moreover, 57% of millennials have never married. During our grandparent’s time, young adults were marrying at 23 years. However, most millennials fear marriage because of the commitments required. In my case, I am planning to marry at 30 years. Lack of financial ability, fear of being heartbroken and rising cases of domestic violence pushes millennials to marry at 30s.
More millennials are from minorities due to immigration and intermarriages. Most of my friends are from ethnic groups. During the time of the baby boomers and the silent generation, millennials from the minority groups were few. In addition, about 4% of today’s millennials are the only ones interested in joining the military. Due to the cooperation of different countries and exposure to the world, millennials are not interested in joining the military. This is in contrast to about 47% of the silent generation whose patriotism pushed them to join the military. Additionally, most millennials prefer staying in metropolitan areas to enjoy the top infrastructure and live a modern lifestyle. I have already planned to settle in town after school. Moreover, millennials like residing in areas where they can easily party and socialize with friends at all times.
