I Dream of Genie, no Amazon!
Amazon is an American conglomerate that deals with digital streaming, cloud computing, artificial intelligence, and e-commerce. Founded in 1994 by Jeff Bezos, it has disrupted the technology world with its leading innovations and mass-scale production. The company attributes its immense success to its guiding principles. The principles are an obsession with customers instead of focusing on competitors, its passion for innovation, its commitment to excellence in all its operations, and forward-thinking. Amazon is the biggest virtual marketplace in the world, providing users with a platform to buy goods through cutting-edge technology and innovations.
The newest innovation is the patent that the company has recently acquired to develop a system that will allow it to send goods to places in which it feels there is a demand. This “anticipatory shipping” system will use a customer’s wish lists, previous purchases, and searches, and the amount of time a customer’s cursor lingers on an article to determine what the customer may want and ship it to them even before they order it (Flacy, 2014). Although this method of shipping may result in returns and unsolicited deliveries, the company defends the move by stating that it may promote goodwill. The move is also aimed at reducing delays in delivery, although it may jibe with the existing alternatives.. Don't use plagiarised sources.Get your custom essay just from $11/page
I, however, do not support anticipatory shipping as algorithms and computers are unable to consider factors that may influence the purchasing patterns of customers, such as changing moods and weather patterns (Thompson, 2018). Moreover, the behavior of customers is not consistent and is subject to change over time, and the system will not accurately capture such inconsistencies. The shipping system also has the potential of becoming intrusive when a customer gets a product they do not need. Essentially, anticipatory shipping will rob the customer of their choice to make an order by themselves and replace it with a computer algorithm. Therefore, I see Amazon losing its authenticity and becoming a genie.
