Ideological conflicts
Ideological conflicts, Politics of social welfare and social movements are the topics that we have discussed in class. Ideological conflict is a war of ideas through the implementation of strategic influence to promote their interests and ideas. Social welfare deals with means to help the less privileged in the society live a better life. This paper seeks to show my understanding of the different topics and how it relates to my personal life and experience.
Some personal experiences can relate to what I have studied. One of my personal experiences is the social welfare policy; under this scheme, there are certain benefits that I enjoy; the housing scheme, Medicaid and social security. These are some of the policies that are of great importance as they serve as insurance and reduce one’s economic burden. I also took part in a social movement in my community to fight against the high rate of insecurity in the community and the organized group aimed at creating awareness to the police of the high crime rate in the society.
There have been several impacts of what we have learnt in class on my personal life, beliefs, and values and most importantly, on my understanding of social welfare. The concept of ideological conflict and perspective has been more appreciated as I have learnt that there different understandings from different scholars who look at a phenomenon different. An instance is the ideology of racism, where black people find it offensive when a white person identifies them as white, yet that is one of the elements that form their description. On the issue of values, beliefs and personal life, I have been able to discern more how societal construct determines how we live and associate with each other.
I have witnessed how social movements and change affects the lives of many people in a society, by having organized effort and collective behaviour to steer ahead an idea or resist unlawful actions by the government. It is through such movements that change has been able to take place in my community, both great and small. Many people understand social welfare to be a means to help the whole society, but social welfare is a concept set up to help the impoverished community and alleviates them from poverty. Several controversies have characterized it as the capitalist wants to ensure the society remains the way it is. The rich remain rich and poor remain people due by denying them opportunities.
A human service professional strives to help the society to attain their best level both as an individual and a group. With the information learnt, one can learn critical skills that will be helpful in the professional. One of the skills derived from information is that a human service professional must be well informed of every community that he or she wishes to help, by being informed the problems of the society are addressed, and permanent solutions are given. Another skill learnt is an analysis of information, for a human professional he or she must be competent in analyzing human systems, interventions that would help people to reach their optimum level and the ability to come up with solutions.
The politics of social welfare policy has been an old concept as Karl Max explains his Marxist theory. The bourgeois strive to ensure that the proletariat does not grow in rank, and their economic status is maintained; therefore, to them, social welfare is nothing more than a fallacy. Some various observations and abilities have been learnt from the different topics learnt. What can be observed from the topic of Social change is that much may not be achieved from social movements that seek a permanent change, but change is a gradual process. This paper has established my understanding of the different topics learnt and their impact on my day to day life.
