Actress Diane Guerrero wrote a memoir of In the Country we Love. It was first published in 2016, which was followed through by Guerreros’s up brings in Boston where she was raised by two parents that were undocumented immigrants originating from Colombia. The parents and older brother were then deported back to Colombia when she was 14 years old. However, having been born in the US, Diane was an American citizen where she stayed to finish high school in Boston, where she lived with her friends and relatives. The book was written by Michelle Burford, which entailed Guerrero’s childhood, where she lived in fear of the immigration officials as well as the impact it had on her teenage years and her childhood.

The memoir focuses more on immigration and parent deportation that happened in Diane Guerrero’s life and the impact it had on her teenage years and childhood. With every ring in their family doorbell and when they saw a police car passing through the streets, they would be filled with the horrifying possibilities of hanging in the air. She always thought that her parents would one day be sent to Colombia. In 2001, Guerrero, who was a high school student then in Boston, came home to find an empty house. Her parents, who were undocumented immigrants from Colombia, were forcefully taken away by the immigration officers. It is said that the mother was cooking dinner while the father pulled into the driveway from work. The couples had been in the United States for almost two decades. So they had overstayed their visas, as well as their efforts in becoming legal citizens, had also failed. Guerrero was born in the United States but was always terrified of being taken away or being sent to foster care.   Friends and neighbours adopted her where she continued with her high school and college then she later landed her first Television role in 2011. However, her parents did not return to the United States.

It turns out that her mother was deported two times before. When she turned 15 years, Diane Guerrero has already seen her dad being swindled by the fraudulent immigrant’s attorney and the brother then deported. Once her parents were arrested, they were forced to pack their bag in Colombia. After the arrest, she visited the mother where they were separated from each other with a giant plastic barrier where she witnessed the indignity of the father being covered in the mouth. He was embarrassed that he had not accessed a toothpaste in jail. Her mother was also arrested while she made breakfast. In such a moment she felt as though the SWAT team had brought in at aiming in breaking up the rowdy pool party.

Diane Guerrero is seen to portray the duality of her existence. She was very joyful in her school life with a passion for practising singing. Her teachers used to talk about college as though they would enrol each other. However, the pressure from home would always overweigh her, which began after the parents were threatened with removal, then their absence after being deportation.

The biggest strength is how even though Diane went through tough times, she emerged stronger and life moved on in a better way after the significant loss. When Diane got her periods, she started a specific job and later began dating. She coped through avoidance of phone calls with her parents as well as expressing annoyance with her situation ship. She always blamed her mother for whatever happened in their life.  Her account for all those conflicting feelings was well shown through the most reliable kind of heartache. She claims that even though she was separated from her mother for over ten years. She attested that the ways of longing for someone with time they end up turning and one forget about them. Life then turns to be healthy, just like Diane’s.

However, even after all that, she emerged to be a great actor and an activist who represents the community which is seen as underrepresented and misrepresented. She has devoted herself to fighting to represent her community in the best way possible. Additionally, in her role as an actor, she portrays characters of being a fighter, and a go-getter with abilities to overcome the challenges and being superheroes in the community.  She represents the America experience, whether black, white or brown. From her experience, she now works with two groups, Mi Familia Vota, which is a civil organization that aims at spreading worked to the community by encouraging them to vote and showing them its importance. From what she went through she is now pushing for her memoir to be adapted by the screens and TV series.
