Introduction to Corrections

Imprisonment is a way of punishment for criminals but should not mean inflicting much suffering and making one worse. They should try to have behaviors changes through supportive social networks and looking into the psychological issues towards the sporadic behaviors and try to treat it rather than containing the action. Comparing the correction system in Norway, it shows how structure and culture of correcting rather than punishing can help the convicts (Benko, 2015) and avoid the spillage of criminals back into the society and achieve total reformation of behavior.

The criminal justice and the police in their abilities try to provide excellent services to the inmates by ensuring that those convicted serve their time and get what they deserve. One concerning fact is the high numbers of incarcerations in the country (Benko, 2015). It is no doubt that the blame on this is the correction facilities structures and framework from the already established culture. The construction itself makes inmates feel detached from society while the culture of constant monitoring and punishing any violent act without checking any underlying cause worsens the situation. The system of correction needs to change and in the segregation policies and allow the inmates to figure out what they did wrong on their own. Though these isolations have well-intended intentions of protecting the inmate from harming themselves and others, they create the worse in a person through loneliness (Frontline, 2014). Prisoners themselves from the numerous interviews are concerned with their social life after prison. Thus the system should facilitate the transition of the criminals to good people through programs and reducing the level of strictness to the confined people and try and listen to their concerns more. As most of them say, it is hard to expect a person to change while treating them like they cannot. The culture and system should change and try to harness the good in the convicts and offer programs that keep them occupied rather than stressed, thus ensuring that reap the benefits of punishment and forgiveness by equipping them on how to handle the social lives once their time is over.
