IT Project Management

A project refers to an undertaking aimed at accomplishing a particular goal by use of distinct and interrelated tasks as well as efficient use of resources. It is temporary and aims at creating a specific commodity, service, or outcome. On top of being short term and distinct, other features of a project include that they are established the use of continuous elaboration, need supplies from various sources, involve uncertainties, and must have a primary sponsor or customer. A project’s objective is normally well defined in various aspects of the schedule, cost, and scope (Pearlson, Saunders & Galletta, 2016).

A company involved in a project needs to have a proper objective in place which assists it in identifying their requirements and purpose before the project begins. A project involves various people, materials, entities, organizations, and equipment. Due to the risks involved in a project, organizations have to compute them and mitigate them appropriately. Projects differ from daily activities; in that, they possessed well-defined goals as well as specific time frames. Therefore, projects have to commence at a specific date and end as specified by the customer. This is different from daily activities that are always continuous, with no deadlines.

The commitment of senior management is very critical to project management. Senior management makes strategic decisions that are very influential to the performance of the organization. A strong commitment means that there is a high possibility of success in a project — pressures from the outside for social achievement together with commitment from top management. Top management helps the managers of projects acquire sufficient resources, get collaboration from other organization’s parts, confirm distinct project needs, and offer reinforcement as mentors or coaches to managers of various projects (Kerzner, 2017). For instance, I have ever been in a project where the top management was not committed and never put in place proper standards to guide the project. There was a lack of collaboration, and eventually, the project lagged behind, and timelines were never met. IT operations have to always take into consideration the moving parts during the execution of large scale projects. Despite rigorous planning, it is normal to experience certain challenges that IT project managers should be prepared to solve. These include mid-project adjustments, keeping in touch with stakeholders in remote locations, poor communication among groups, questionable delivery models, and the absence of project-management procedures (Schwalbe, 2015).
