In any professionalism, there is a specific set of principles called code of ethics which guide the daily operations of the business. The code of ethics helps employees and employers to conduct their activities with integrity and honesty. Code of ethics also determine mutual understanding between coworkers, promotes unity among all members of the organization, and supports cooperation between various departments within the organization. In cases, an employee refuses to observe all codes of ethics, he or she is likely to be dismissed from the organization. Roy (2017) states that all sectors of the economy require integrity, honesty, and proper conduct.
Further, he says, different sectors have different sets of conduct which a professional is supposed to adhere to. For example, in the medical industry, a doctor is expected not to reveal personal information about the patient to an unauthorized individual. In banking, a professional is expected to observe honesty, accountability, and integrity. Code of conduct distinguishes human beings from other animals because it expresses one’s ability to see, reason, evaluate, and make a decision based on proper rules of conduct. Roy’s article evaluates the fundamental rights of why individuals should observe the code of ethics and thus making his article have more weight on this topic.
For a long time, numerous journals, articles, and books have been written about codes of ethics; however, in many sectors of the economy, accountability, honesty, and integrity are not practiced fully. Most employers and employees hardly observe all codes of ethics leading to collapsing of businesses or organizations. In the business world, integrity and accountability, which are seldom practiced, determine the long-term success of the company. The code of conduct for most students from higher learning institutions such as universities and colleges is low. Several cases on abortions, suicide, Cyber-crimes, or murder have been reported, and the primary victims were university students. Although the government has enacted different laws to prevent such malpractices in universities and colleges, still such cases are rampant. However, enlightening university students about the dangers of involving themselves in such malpractices could help reduce the number of crimes committed in society today.
Professionals, students, and society members are obligated to observe and practice all codes of ethics. For an individual to practice codes of ethics acceptably, some guidelines can help him, or her achieve that. First, a professional should disclose information to authorized people only. Information disclosure promotes teamwork and cooperation; however, the information shared should exclusively remain among authorized parties to prevent it from being manipulated or used unprofessionally. Secondly, communicating with other people. Communication between professionals or between professionals and non-professionals helps in concluding that satisfies both parties, thus eradicating dictatorship in leadership. Lastly, the code of ethics states that an individual is responsible for his or her conduct to ensure that he or she does not go against the existing norms and taboos. A professional should thus respectably conduct himself or herself through observing integrity, honesty, and accountability in all activities.
