KATHERINE JOHNSON’S BIOGRAPHY REVIEW
According to this text, the goal of education is to help people achieve their goals. Since Katherine was young, she had a great passion for Science and Mathematics. She then put this love for studies into place to enable her to achieve her dreams of excelling in the field of Mathematics. Even though she faced challenges in securing a job at NASA, she never gave up on her dreams. Furthermore, when she retired, she spent her time encouraging young people to work hard in their studies and never give up on their dreams. (Melfi, 50)
Prejudice caused different races to be separated from each other. African-Americans could not get jobs in Mathematics and Science and also women of any race could not have a degree in Mathematics. This impacted Johnson’s pursuit of a career in that the only job she could do after graduating was only teaching though she had graduated with a degree in Mathematics.
From Johnson’s response to prejudice, we can learn never to give up on our dreams. Even when she didn’t get the job during the first application, she never gave up but tried the next year. We also learn to keep on working on our dreams no matter the challenges we face on the way and not lose focus.
In the definition of roles of men and women, it can be concluded that both genders can undertake any role. Katherine helped expand the role of women in Math and Science by proving that even women can excel in these fields. When men and women have equal opportunities, the larger society benefits in that the two genders can work together to achieve more. For instance, when Katherine worked with those groups of men, they achieved more than when she was not around.
