Knowledge sharing
Knowledge management is a process that involves creating, sharing, storing, and use of knowledge that is to be used in achieving a business objective. Knowledge management is useful in an organization since it increases organization performance and the development of human resources. It also improves the relationship between clients and suppliers. Fewer studies have explored the application of KM in information technology projects. Management of IT projects entirely involves since it is knowledge-intensive, require various stakeholders, and inter-project relationship. However, knowledge management among stakeholder in an IT project reduces over time due to knowledge sharing. Knowledge sharing is a process in knowledge management where a group of people exchange knowledge and create new knowledge.
KS is vital in a project since it helps avoid repetition and learning of previous mistakes and success. Thus, project managers need to organize how knowledge is shared. Otherwise, there will be a repetition of errors. Also, they organize how knowledge is shared when stakeholders of a project are in various geographical areas through emails, blogs and forums. Though face-to-face is the best way to share knowledge since there are interactions, knowledge shared can be tacit or explicit. Tacit knowledge is a type of knowledge gained through interactions with colleagues, while explicit knowledge is extracted from stored documents. There is also technical and business knowledge. The article analyzes the relationship between knowledge sharing and project management process group in IT project. The research showed that technologies used in KS and PMPGs were similar during all the project life cycle. This is because all the activities were relevant throughout the project.
The research indicates a conceptual advance by connecting two main areas, KM and institutional PM, precisely in the subfields, KS and PMPGs. The study identified knowledge types within each PMPG and opportunities to influence the transfer of information to enhance the organization’s results obtained through KS. This work provides a means of assessing whether the mutual information is of a technical or managerial type to maximize interaction and the production of knowledge. The study also adds a new stakeholder to be considered as the Service Request Manager for further research involving KS assignments and PM. The findings outlined in this paper can help stakeholders share knowledge in similar IT project settings.
The article is useful for a project manager while developing a project scope. First, it informs the importance of knowledge management in a project. Knowledge management is vital since it enhances the performance of a project and improves human resources through the knowledge gained through the transfer of knowledge. The article also is relevant in the development of a project scope since it explains that knowledge sharing is the most critical process of knowledge management. Also, how knowledge is shared from various colleagues and stakeholders through face to face interaction or using emails or blogs in the different project stages. Besides, it reminds the project of the importance of documenting shared information, whether managerial and technical, to avoid repetition of past mistakes and to learn from the mistakes and success.
Also, the article informs that tacit knowledge is the best way to gain information since it is an interactive way to acquire information. Also, the article reports us that it is vital to choose and engage project stakeholders wisely. Depending on the type of stakeholder, each should be allocated in project stages that they are knowledgeable. It is also essential to engage with the stakeholder to ensure their activities are in align with the project activities and scope required.
One central question I would ask is how much will it cost to implement Knowledge Management in a project?
