Should older Americans who spend most of their time
alone be provided with assistance to become more socially active?
According to the recent studies older Americans in the modern era there is a revolution based on where the old life. The lonely elderly they spend most of the time as well as which provide support and assistance to them. Over the years many of these aged individuals including American widows and widowers live alone while another portion lives with their families (Rook, 2014). This cannot be said to be a sad story to the young generation, who refuse to provide care and protection to the elderly in the society since according to researchers it is true that large portion of the young generation believe that they have an obligation of taking care of the aged in the community. Though due to some challenges in life such as economic constraints some of the aged persons could leave their families for nursing homes to seek much care. Poverty and lack of support from the family lead to elderly experiencing social isolation. There is a need for people to take care of the elderly they need to spend much time with their families and neighbors (Branch & Jette, 2012).
Interestingly having care and support for the aged endure that they develop strong physical, and cases of deteriorating mental or physical health are limits since these individual are socially active through interaction that is not only based at the family but also outside their homes. Living alone could involve financial strains to elders since they need money to cater for their personal experiences mortgage payments and medical services. This could be much easier if the elderly get assistance from the family of the society since they are eligible for assistance. Don't use plagiarised sources.Get your custom essay just from $11/page
Explain why or why not. Finally, provide suggestions for what types of
interventions would be helpful in combating loneliness in the elderly.
They should be helped in adjusting to the society face and cope challenges such as changes in bodies and mental ability as well as living conditional and loss of their family members these could separate them from loneliness. According to the active theory it is mentioned that involving the aged in social and physical activities make them better adjusted. They could result in lowering the mortality rate in the late adulthood since exposing them to informal social activities could easily contribute to making them satisfied and making them focused in life.Another suggestion is that there should be care for the lonely elders by taking them to medical care and not just ignoring and overlooking their ill health and associating it with symptoms of ageing and physical health complaints like lacking energy having depression or low memory due to age (Branch & Jette, 2012).There is a need for focusing on the elder physical health and not overlook it any more confirming that it is not mental health depression a lot should be done.
Generally assisting the elderly will enable health cares to identify depressions that are related to cognitive impairment and memory lapse thus exposing the person to society and making them successful in the community. Living in the absence of disabilities and depression would make the elderly enjoy life and feel more connected to the society.
