Laura and her family

Laura is the sister to Laurie and Jose and the daughter to Mr. and Mrs. Sheridan. Her family is wealthy, living in a mansion in a leafy suburban region. The family can afford to throw parties occasionally for their children, and people of their caliber got invited. They take their time to prepare for the party and utilize the best materials to make their party glam and glitz. On the morning of their party, they had lilies brought by as well as mouth-watering food. Mrs. Sheridan left the children to organize most of the party details, except for some minor issues, such as the various flowers used. By all means, the family seems to be doing very well and are well capable of doing anything without feeling the financial grip, unlike some of their neighbors. However, having been brought up in wealth, Laura still cares for her less disadvantaged neighbors as she proved to her family.

Laura has a deep sense of sympathy as she feels for most of the things that she interacts with daily. For instance, when showing the workmen where to pitch up the marquee, she is instantly amazed by the smile of the workmen and sees them as very friendly. Also, her family has a different view from hers on the majority of issues. When her mother told her and her brother to look onto the cook who terrified her mother, Laura and her sibling found out the cook was not as terrifying as her mother had claimed. In general, Laura is an innocent girl who sees the world through the sympathy lens and thus tries to makes it a better place to the best of her ability. Laura is tender, showing affection for most of the things that her family members are not concerned with; neither do they seem to care for the mundane stuff that Laura shows love.

Thus, for the mentioned reasons, it is understandable why Laura was anxious when she went to visit the deprived family. The family had just lost their breadwinner to an accident and were mourning. Having their neighbors grieving about losing their closest family members, it was only heartless and uncalled for having them proceeding with their party. She felt that it would not portray an image of goodwill for them to be celebrating, yet their neighbors had just lost their kin. Worse still was the fact that they were wealthy while their neighbors were poor, and thus it would seem like the wealthy were inconsiderate of the poor. She thought that it would portray an image of mockery wearing her hat, a sign of wealth, to the bereaved home. It would not be fair to the mourning family as they were mourning, and yet there came a rich person don in wealthy people’s clothing to console with them poor folks.

Hence the hat was causing Laura anxiety. She believed that the hat made ger stood out light a flicker of light in the dark and thus caused too much unnecessary attention towards her. Given that her family members had earlier on complimented her, she thought that that the hat must have been a show stopper in the dead person’s home. Laura behaved anxiously, perhaps all aware of the attention her hat was getting her.

Laura bent her head and hurried on. She wished now she had put on a coat. How her frock shone! And the big hat with the velvet streamer—if only it was another hat! ()

She was supposed to sympathize with the bereaved family, but instead, she took all the sunshine at home and alternatively, perhaps, made the people forget what they had gone for in the said homestead in the first place. Given Laura’s nature, this made her believe that she did wrong for taking the sunshine out her neighbor’s home, and for this, Laura thought she owed the dead person an apology.

She owed an apology not only for bringing all the attention to herself with her wealthy piece of attire but for her family behavior. It was not humane of her family to continue with the party, yet one of their neighbors lay dead. It was unfair for her family to send her down to the poor people’s home with the left-over foodstuffs from their party because she thought it was not a good idea at all. It will seem like the wealthy family is trying to communicate a message that the low-income family was only worth left-over meals. More importantly was the fact that her family members, except her father, were against her idea of postponing their party in respect to the dead man. All that they noticed on her was the beautiful hat, the hat which stole the attention of the mourners. Thus, she had to apologize to the dead man for causing all the distraction through the symbolism of her hat.
