Let There Be Dark essay

Write Paragraph 1 Here → The use of allusion and metaphors in the essay “Let There Be Dark” by Paul Bogard is crucial in proving why darkness is so important. He begins his article looking back at his time spent at his family’s cabin on a Minnesota Lake, where he experienced the beauty of natural darkness. He states, “I knew woods so dark that my hands disappeared before my eyes. I knew night skies in which meteors left smoky trails across sugary spreads of stars”. Darkness is magnificent and natural, and he goes on to say that many will not have this experience because “the country is covered with a blanket of light.” The use of literary devices causes the reader to sympathize with the author because it feels as if something good is disappearing. The allusion of the hands going causes the reader to feel more engaged and want to experience it for themselves. The use of these literary devices not only enhances the reading and makes it more interesting, but it pulls in the reader and makes them want to experience it for themselves.

Write Paragraph 2 Here → The essay by Paul Bogard, “Let There Be Dark,” has multiple instances where the author uses scientific evidence to prove his point. Bogard starts off his third paragraph by comparing the importance of darkness to a worldwide catastrophe. He states, “Our bodies need darkness to produce the hormone melatonin, which keeps certain cancers from developing, and bodies need darkness for sleep. Sleep disorder has been linked to diabetes, obesity”. Comparing darkness to common diseases that are very unhealthy for the human body and death can frighten the reader. The comparison makes the reader feel they can become diagnosed with any of these symptoms at the moment. This causes the reader to do what is best for themselves, which, according to the essay, is to preserve natural darkness. Natural darkness is fundamental, and Bogard makes the reader feel that by not only making them fear for their lives through scientific evidence but with literary devices as well.
