Lord of the Flies novel review
‘Lord of the Flies’ is a novel written in 1954 by William Golding, who was a lieutenant during World War II in the Royal Navy, where he saw various actions when he fought on the battlefield. The novel was written in a time when there were several atomic wars. ‘Lord of Flies’ takes place in a tropical island located in the Pacific Ocean, which does not have a name and is unoccupied. Also, the novel takes place during an imaginary atomic worldwide war in the 1950s. The setting of the novel had a significant influence on the actions and attitudes of the characters in the novel. The environment of the novel ‘Lord of the Flies’ is an island that is used to represent a global society. Also, the disagreeing human desires concerning civilization is the major theme in the novel. In the novel, the kids brought with them the corruption of civilization, which led to disaster.
There are no female characters in the novel ‘Lord of the Flies’ because the author argues that the book is about boys, and hence there is no way it could be about girls. Golding claims that he has been a brother, father, and will be a grandfather; thus, there is no way his book will be about females or girls. Besides, the author of ‘Lord of the Flies’ argues that there are no female characters in the novel because boys are more similar to a scaled-down form of society compared to the way a group of little girls would be. He claims women and men are not equal because the males are always considered to be more superior, and hence there is no way little girls would become a type of image of the civilization of the society in the novel. Moreover, there are no female characters in the novel because Golding argues that if he used both boys and girls in his novel, the book would be about sex, yet he wanted it to be about the issue of how individuals are to live together in the community.
If the novel, ‘Lord of the Flies’ had a female character the events would have changed because if a woman was placed in an island where there are no rules as well as no resources nothing would go wrong since she would ensure that the environment there is understanding and peace in the environment where she lives. Equally, a woman would ensure that things run smoothly because women are great, and they tend to cooperate, and hence, the novel would lose its themes since female characters would change the events of the book n significant ways.
The book, ‘Lord of the Flies’ is considered as children’s literature because the main characters are a group of boys who are stranded in a tropical island located in the Pacific Ocean that is unoccupied after their plane crashed. The use of little boys makes the book to challenge human nature in a manner that relates to every individual. There is redemption at the end of the book because it concludes with the boys meeting a British naval officer who has come to the beach when he sees the island burning from his ship, thus making them realize that they have been saved. The redemption at the end of the novel begins following the death of Piggy and the murder of Simon “Piggy and Ralph, under the threat of the sky, found themselves eager to take a place in this demented but partly secure society” (152). Besides, redemption is seen when the boys began to narrate what they had been through to the naval officer, and reality started hitting them, making them cry hence being changed from murderous beasts back into frightened kids.
