 Lorde review

Equality is one of the most undermined aspects in society today. Everyone thinks that there is no better being than who they are in the contemporary world. The point of reference for judgment and assessment is no longer about what is wrong and what is right, but of the subject individual who is making the decision. Thus if we are not like the other person, there is no way they will come to acknowledge our ideologies. And considering that society is made of different people in the aspects of gender, race, and age, equality will become an almost unachievable goal. And that is the position that Lorde is addressing in this essay, her being black, lesbian, socialist, mother and a member of an interracial couple makes her not just an inferior person in the society but a typical deviant. This paper is an exploration of how she handles and talks about the popular intersectional feminism.

In the third page, the third paragraph, Lorde assesses the difference that lies in the privileges of the white woman over the black woman. In most cases, the looked at side of things is how the men are more privileged in society than their female counterparts. But that is not where it all ends. In a society where there are black and white women at the same time, the differences stretch beyond the gender line. There is more to their sex, and that is their color. The black women are considered not just to be inferior but also lesser humans as to when compared to white women. Thus, in this case, gender stretches down to the color of the individual. Being born white is a pleasure that a woman should appreciate as per Lorde. Given the example of literature work in her work. The literature of black women is not even considered for coverage. There is the African or Black authentication that comes with their work, and the white teachers cannot cover or comprehend. A white woman is more privileged if they are to get into writing as per when compared to a black woman who is venturing into the same. The work of the latter will be covered with ease since, in the “world of the whites,” they can make better literature to be understood by the people. Hence their work becomes apt to be used as course materials.

Thus intersectional feminism is much prevalent today. When the women, regardless of color, are supposed to support each other because of their marginalized entity, they are instead repelling because of their differences in gender. It is very inconsiderate that a woman forgets the pain that they get when they are being discriminated against in opportunities by the male gender and that they start discriminating against their women fellows just because they are white and the others are black. Expectations would be that there is supposed to be unity among all blacks, all females, and the age groups, but that is still a goal that the society is trying to achieve. It is no longer a world where one is their sister’s keeper; it is one for herself society. If the world is favoring an individual, then that is all they need, the other person does not matter. It is normal for a person who has not tried to fit in the shoe. And that is the reason the platform is at the oppressed is supposed to educate the oppressor because they do not get the situation until it is narrated to them. For the oppressed, it is a darker shade thrown at them, and it is even a more challenging course to cleanse it.

Equality should be an objective of the overall society, but that is not the situation in the contemporary world, it is a goal of the oppressed. Only the oppressed feel the impact of not being given the same chances as the imposed superior beings. Being born in a different color, gender, and age groups has generations has brought a line of division in the society that still needs closure. Lorde has tried to explore the challenges and discomforts born into the society mothered by inequality. Her story is more of a campaign rather than a passage to align.
