Making and Remaking in Ordering

PART 1: ESSAY

Drawing on the ordering Lives chapter and film as well as your feedback from TMA01, define “Making and Remaking” and outline examples concerning ordering.

Making and Remaking in Ordering

Social Ordering refers to the ways and manner in which various activities and components in a given society work together to create and maintain an efficient status quo.  Such components include different social structures and institutions that portray people’s interactions and behaviours in society. For social orders to be created and maintained appropriately, Making and Remaking must be followed effectively. Making and remarking in society refers to the various activities that people decide to perform as well as the associations they select to create or destroy with certain people and places. Making and remaking requires that people make effective adjustments since the world is also at a constant change.

There are numerous examples of making and remaking of social ordering that is common and important in any given town. Firstly, as a means of creating a productive and pleasant social environment where people can effectively conduct their day to day activities in the streets peacefully and without any disturbance, the pavements on the roads are always made clean. Several street cleaners are usually assigned the duty of cleaning the street sidewalks.  Cleaning of the street pavements makes the usage of the road more comfortable and pleasant to the social environment (The Open University, 2014).

The second example of Making and Remaking that brings about smooth ordering is on a mother who educates her children on the appropriate and safe ways of crossing the road. By teaching children on the best ways of crossing paths safely, they learn to behave appropriately when in the streets. Teaching children these skills and behaviours, enables them to recognize that the street is a public area that requires routines and appropriate behaviours that are different from the ones practised at home; this is termed as socialism (The Open University, 2014).

Thirdly, making and remaking is also seen in several relations that happen in people’s lives as well as to material objects. For example, to create a smooth ordering system in the streets, people’s behaviours are directed by various street signs, which ensures that people behave and move in a particular way that is required by to maintain order in the streets.  Another example of an order that provides effective marking and remarking of the street is; the menus and the price lists found in various shops that indicate to the customers the values of multiple products, thus saving on time and creating an order.  The CCTV cameras that have been installed to watch over the streets are also examples of Marking and remarking. The cameras help in creating a secure environment, this environment usually enables various activities carried out in streets to go on without the fear of being robbed, mugged or injured thereby resulting to social orders on the roads. The laws that regulate and restrict the access and movements of people in multiple places such as the pubs and night clubs are also an excellent example of marking and remarking as they promote social orders in the streets (The Open University, 2014).

Most of the making and remaking cases that bring about ordering in a social context are always unnoticed by various people. This is because most people take these practices to be part of their lives, thus taking them for granted.  In the contemporary UK, people live their lives within an orderly society. Social order works well in most cases since various people have been educated on both the official and informal rules guiding their behaviours wherever they are (The Open University, 2014).

In conclusion, appropriate social order is always achieved when people act and interact according to the relevant shared rules as well as expectations concerning the way people are expected to behave and to relate to their social and material environment. Making and remaking are essential as they serve in various roles that help in creating social orders. Making and remaking such as cleaning of the pavements in the streets are essential as they help in keeping the streets pleasant to use. The teaching of children the safety methods of crossing the road is also crucial as it helps in them know the rules and expectations of the streets, thus following the routines involved.

The ability to identify the regulations is not always shared equally by the society members; this has always led to the creation of social disorder in most societies. Disorder, in this case, refers to disturbing the peace of the public in a disorderly manner. It can also be defined as behavior that is contrary to the desired or imagined state of social order. Social orders are fundamental in the smooth running of the activities in society.  It is made in part by persons who are acting and interacting according to the shared rules and expectations relating to the ways of behaving (The Open University, 2014).

PART 2: Self: reflection

Identify two areas of your work (Relating to TMA 02) that you would like your tutor to feedback on, stating briefly why you welcome feedback on these areas.

I want to get more information on the practical strategies that should be done to ensure that all people in society are educated on the rules and expectations of Marking and remarking to create social orders.

I will welcome the feedback in this area since many people are still not aware of what is expected of them as far as the order in the society is concerned.

PART 3: Forum posting

Write up to 100 words responding to another student’s post about their street, commenting on how it is different from and similar to your street.
