Measurement and Operationalization Assignment
You will need to understand what it means to “measure a variable” of interest, and you will want to be able to assess the strengths and weaknesses of a measurement process. This will often involve you selecting measurement instruments and utilizing other data collection techniques. The purpose of this assignment is to teach you how to find, evaluate, and critique appropriate testing and measurement tools in health care. To complete this assignment, you must identify one variable related to your health care problem identified in Assignment 1 that you will operationalize for the assignment.
Requirements: length 4 pages, APA format, submit in word format with author/student’s name. Page limitation does not include references or title page. No abstract is required.
You are asked to identify one variable that would be important to a hypothetical study related to the topic you explored in your literature review. Consider:
Introduction of variable related to health problem. Why is it significant ? Be sure to define it using the literature and current examples of why the variable is important in your paper. [unique_solution]
Operationalize the variables
Describe the variable and how it will be measured. How has the measurement tool been used in the past—describe all you can about the different types of reliability and validity from the original article documenting the development of this instrument. This can be supplemented with additional information from other select articles.
Conclusion- discussion of the relevance of this instrument to the conclusions that can be reached in any hypothetical research proposed. Any limitations are noted. (Note missing information about validity or reliability) Evidence that ethical, budgetary, and time constraints, and reading level are also noted if appropriate. If these are not noted describe.
| Briefly describes the o variable related to the health problem. | Discusses why it is significant. Conceptual definitions of the variable is provided. Examples of how and why the variable is being viewed in relationship to your health issue. (Be brief ) | 15 |
| Operationalization of the variable | Careful selection of instrument is evident with an appropriate match to the purpose. A literature search is conducted to retrieve the instrument.
Evidence of searching for the classic original article with the instrument is present and the article is attached.
Defines the operational definition. Describes the instrument – is it a scale, how many items, how is it scored, what does the score mean? Describes validity and reliability. Evidence of critique is present. * | 10

| Conclusion | Describes the relevance of this instrument to any proposed research study. Summarizes types of conclusions that can be reached. Limitations are noted. Evidence that ethical, budgetary, and time constraints, and reading level are considered in selection. | 15 |
| Writing Style | Writing is organized, clear and cogent with logical sequence of information, organized by subheadings, uses good grammar and sentence structure. APA format must be followed in citing sources in the text of the paper and for the reference list at the end of the paper.

*A critique would include an assessment of length, complexity & readability, validity, reliability, and sensitivity and specificity when appropriate. Specificity and sensitivity would be assessed when diagnostic tools are used in research.
