Introduction

Qualitative research involves a diversity of methodological approaches with diverse disciplinary tools and origin. In this report, we are going to discuss a mixed-method research study as a commonly used approach. The report will provide a background for those who will meet this methodology in their reading rather than orders for carrying out research. I have described the approaches, characteristics, uses, and features of this approach. The following research questions are going to be discussed in the report; what is the mixed method theory? When is it used? What are the critical features of a mixed method?

Methodology

The study was conducted on a caregiver burden required to extend understanding of the social practice of mothering children with disabilities. It meant to explore in depth the nature of the troubles apparent and the possibilities of reimbursement of the role of maternal caregiving through a contemporary, mixed-method approach. It surveyed eighty-one mothers of children with disabilities and followed up with in depth interviews with a focused sample of seven of these mothers 1-3 years after the survey. Interviewees were selected according to the degree to which they represented the variety of the background characteristics among the participants of the survey.

In interviews, mothers were asked to share their children’s births stories and diagnosis. Also, they were enquired about children’s relations with family members, friends, neighbors, and members of their wider community and service providers. They were not particularly questioned about burden, stigma, or perceived benefits but were inquired to talk about how their parent’s experiences had affected them.

Data from interviews and surveys were triangulated in the analysis to create greater insight than would not be gotten by a single method. For instance, while the survey results highlighted the constraints of sociostructural that produce a burden of care, the interview results demonstrated that, in spite of these socio-cultural constraints, the majority of mothers perceive valuable reimbursement in having a child with a disability. Those perceived benefits can be affected negatively by perceived stigma.

Findings/Results

Mixed-Methods is a new methodology of research which highlights the use of both qualitative and quantitative data as well as meaningful integration of qualitative and quantitative methods within a program or study of inquiry to generate more persuasive and credible conclusions about the research problem. MMR is highly used due to its ability to address multifaceted research situations and obtain an absolute picture of a problem in practice by getting answers to both confirmatory and exploratory questions within sig le study.

This method of research helps in exploring a more different point of view on the same issue and providing background understanding that is shaped by cultural experience and real-life experience. The fundamental premise of this methodology is such incorporation permits more complete and synergetic use of data than to separate qualitative and quantitative analysis of data collection. Mixed methods research originated in the social sciences and has lately expanded into the medical and sciences, including fields like nursing, social work, family medicine, medal health, allied health, pharmacy, and others. According to Creswell, its procedures have been refined and developed to suit a wide variety of research questions. The procedures include offering alternative mixed methods designs, advancing rigor, specifying a shorthand notation system that describes the design to enhance communication across fields, visualizing processes via diagrams, noting research questions that can chiefly benefit from integration, and developing underlying principle for conducting diverse forms of mixed methods studies.

There are five broad reasons for mixing qualitative and quantitative methods which collogue identified to reach justifiable conclusions. They include complimentarily, triangulation, development, expansion and initiation. These reasons for using Mixed-Method Research influence ways researchers incorporate qualitative and quantitative methods within precise mixed methods role and designs they assign to each method in the researcher process. According to Lingard, the strategic relationship among the methods is one of the main methodological considerations in deciding for a mixed methods design.

Three models of mixed methods design logics by which qualitative and quantitative methods can be incorporated in a study have been complex in mixed methods literature. They include concurrent Quan + Qual design, sequential Quan → Qual design and sequential Qual → design. By using these mixed methods design logics, nursing researchers can meaningfully apply MMR with participatory research approaches like community-based participatory action research, to enhance translation of evidence-based practice results in the efforts to address a meaningful change.

Community-based participatory action research is a methodological approach which focuses on looking for solutions to practical issues hence creating evidence-based knowledge for empowering participants for change action and improving action. The action research is taken on as an umbrella term by researchers across disciplines with reference to research which integrate practice and participatory oriented approaches. As a methodological approach, action research ‘seeks to bring together action and reflection, theory and practice, in participation with others, in the pursuit of practical solutions to issues of pressing concern to people. ‘

According to Lewin, action research is a recurring process of four iterative stages of, planning, reflecting acting and observing which include an exact action research methodological steps. The cycle starts with recognizing practical issues of relevant importance and reflecting on its possible solutions. The process involves reflection on the action results and what needs to be changed or improved for the next action step. The action research cycle is repetitive as many times as required till the issue is resolved

. Theoretically the CBPAR process involves six iterative phases: acting, diagnosing, reconnaissance, evaluation, planning and monitoring. Intervention or action is central to the idea of CBPAR and needs spiral of action cycles aimed at implementing, planning, and evaluating action to improve practice. By observing and reflecting on intervention effects, and using this information for planning consequent action cycles, practitioner researchers like health workers and nurses become empowered to engage patients and other stakeholders in the process of change action and make enhancement to their working environment.

Conclusion

Mixed method research study can be more useful in answering health and clinical delivery research questions in ways which challenge conventional thinking, provide local solutions and offer multidimensional insights. Using this approach, due to the integration of the quantitative and qualitative results, people would be attracted by the value of having more data from variety of sources. Although this method of research has many advantages compared to single method, it can be sometimes three times hard. This is because you can not only have to do solid research with the different methods, but it also can take just as much effort to integrate what you learn from those different methods.
