Moral Criticisms of the Market
Most Christian socialists consider capitalism as corrupt and prefer communism. However, Ken S.Ewert explains that a free market cannot be classified as good or bad since it is just a system that is put in place. The people who operate within the market, however, can make decisions and differentiate what is right from what is wrong. They can understand sin, which makes them responsible for the kind of evil that exists in the economic system put in place, whether it is based on command or free will.
I agree with Ewert on his critique. Jesus taught that the poor should be taken care of rather than rebuked or eliminated. This means that regardless of the system that is in place, there shall always be the poor. The church should put most of its efforts into correcting the people who dwell within a particular system rather than focusing on the system, whether it is economic or any other. Once the morality of the people is on the right path, then the system follows suit.
He also relates the command economic system to being non-biblical. God granted free will to man so that he can make his own decisions. He did not put a system mandatory for a man to follow. Subjecting the people to command on how to handle their own money is like forcing him to bow down to unnecessary power. Most economic relations also rely on free will. Just as a marriage requires the consent and free will of both the bride and bridegroom, the economic relations should not be any different.
Finally, God gave man a chance to make his own decision in the Garden of Eden. Ewert relates this to advertising, where everyone is given a choice and is answerable to any decisions that he makes, but the system should not dictate their choice.
