Movie Review A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night
The movie A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night is an intuitive film. In its way, it depicts various themes and thoughts through the scenes and characters. The scene of discussion in this segment is the “dance scene.” The girl enters a well-furnished apartment with ‘Saeed’ inside, and in the background, some music is playing. She carries herself in a slithery way while wearing a poignant face. Saeed, on the other hand, is snorting coke and counting money before he makes a move towards her in a sexually oriented dance moves. He is unaware of the intent of the girl.
The scene elicits questions such as:
- What themes are visible in the scene
- What perception of society is given out
The scene evokes a theme of female maltreatment in this society, where a man drenched in drugs slowly leaves his business, and without uttering a word to the ‘girl,’ he makes a sexual move. In a somewhat ironic context, the guy does not realize that the woman is there to punish him, yet he stills sexually entices her. Another theme is drug abuse, Saeed is a drug user and peddler (3.06), and this implies the state that the society is facing, its members abusing drugs. Immorality is also another theme elicited in the scene. The man has a tattoo on his neck written “sex,” a rather symbolical context of what he tries to do. He gyrates his hips with the shirt unbuttoned and makes a sexual move on the girl who submits (3.46).
The scene brings out a society that is not dear to its women. Showing submission to any man implies a lack of women’s power. The ideas of this girl are to punish the sexual predators, and it gives out a good picture of the vile women go through in these societies.
