My approach to End-of-module assessment (EMA)

My approach to End-of-module assessment (EMA) will categorically focus on my ability to put together an argument in social science which applies different conceptual frameworks, evidence, and theories. In my approach, it will be quite evident through the writing skills that I will demonstrate superior skills and a thorough understanding of the course work that I went through. In my entire piece of presentation, I will present two out of different strands that are equally relevant to EMA. According to me, EMA has been an instrument piece in my academic journey on the campus since it incorporates proper assignment planning, development of the skills acquired in writing, and the integration of varied materials from different sources as a way of making a social inquiry. In this assignment, I will focus my efforts on the inequalities and how these inequalities are created and recreated in society to accomplish this task effectively. I will solely focus on two distinct strands concerning End-of-module assessment.

Inequality arises from the fact that there is unevenness in the distribution of resources, which are considered valuable and of social significance in a given society. Come to think about it; what brings about the question of poverty? According to one school of thought, poverty is the making of an individual. Poverty could only be blamed on the less fortunate of the society and the down-trodden upon poor. On the contrary, poverty could single-handedly be blamed on the surrounding society. As a proper way to demonstrate this scenario, I chose to use John, who is a disabled person, who always uses a wheelchair to traverse around town.

By the fact that he is disabled in a way, he appears to be different from the entire society in which he dwells for a mere fact that to reach his destination; he could be limited to the use of pavements, where disturbance would be minimal. John is ok on his own, but the way society envisions him is contrary to the actual truth about how he considers himself. Some choices limit him because of his prevailing condition. All individuals who dwell in a particular surrounding are shaped by the environment and perceived as that. In a more advanced study of consumer behavior, most advertisements do reflect the geographic and demographic elements of individuals.

According to Bauman (Open University, 2018), society is unequal and more so stands divided based on the consumption patterns and abilities. The purchase and consumption behavior of individuals varies based on the level of disposable income and other unavoidable distinguishing factors that they could think of. Whenever there is a link between consumption and ethnicity or gender, it becomes apparent that wealth will be a determining factor because these factors will out rightly lead to the seductive appeal towards consumerism. Instances such as when individuals are perceived to have a smaller income, their image could be questionable in the eye of the public opinion. Furthermore, the issue of market or political freedoms, a different approach will be used in gauging individuals. People will tend to come up with different lifestyles that never existed before the change in the status of their identities.

In his attempt to construct a conceptual framework, Bauman (The Open University) asserts that there exist substantial divisions in the form of social divisions, consumer society, and inequalities. Bauman is intelligent enough to use tricky words and phrases such as repressed or seduced concepts when trying to understand the nature of social divisions. By so doing, he can identify and categorize the inclusive and excluded divisions. In the consumer society, many fallacies arise to assign meaning to the kind of campaign being promoted. This could be proven by the evidence seen in the purchase behaviors of different consumers in the market. Markets have never exhaustively satisfied the needs of customers who frequent them.

The strand of Making Lives, as stated in the Open University (2018), uses social inquiries and videos that illustrate its contributions. In the study of John Allen of The Open University (2018), it was discovered that individual’s lives are formed within societies and through the same societies lending way for the opportunities they encounter in their self-designed lives. Social scientists are majorly concerned with what is around them and, as such, will always seek to understand why some situations in life are the ways they are, whenever they are not affected by the immediate environment. No matter what happens, they maintain their nature as they are. A closer look at the seductive role of power, some phenomena is analyzed depending on the advantages or disadvantages associated with them. John further tried to associate the prevailing differences and how they get formed in a social context via the consumer society in a manner that inequalities register to create lasting change.

A closer analysis of the Connecting Lives Strand, there are different relationships such as associations and attachments which interconnect individuals. The interconnection brings about social connections as well as international and national migration and mobility. People are always firmly attached to the places they are inhabited. A more in-depth analysis reveals that societies get affected by externalities, such as migration and global markets (Open University, 2018).

A perfect example that projects the reasons behind ethnic diversity in the UK context are as a result of the settlement caused by different conflicts that affect different countries. Another positive example is that one of urbanization and how it changed the mobility patterns. In such situations, the poor will rely on exclusion and marginality, whereas the rich are connected to well-established connections. Several factors lead to the different perceptions developed by people towards those who have proper relationships, privately educated, and the wealthy lot. The migration patterns are attached to particular factors as per the studies where segregation was also a norm.

According to the Open University (2018), the issue of Connecting Lives there is a crosscutting connection that brings about the association relevant in a social world that individuals dwell in. In a way, the level of intimacy is expressed in the prevailing relationships, associations, and attachments that form part of the said individuals. When a proper focus is levelled on how societies coexist, it is apparent that, to some degree, there is inequality. From the inequality status, those without appropriate connections will get a chance to reconnect again as they forge a way forward on how to enhance relationships. It is essential to ensure that one establishes the difference that thrives among those involved (Open University, 2018).

The three lessons that are well learned in the course of my study were evidence analysis, essay planning, and working via dyslexia. I was always led by my intuitions to improve my prowess in writing as per the goal intended to achieve. Before submitting my work, it was a habit that I was to double-check my job and also get an opinion from a colleague on my overall performance in the assignment given the seriousness of the EMA.
