My life and profession
About 10 years ago, I was still living in my parents’ house and drowning in my thoughts about my future. I had just graduated out of college two years before; with no job and future not looking bright. Society and family expect that once you are out of college you should have a lucrative job, but this was not my case. Growing up, I have always believed that there is nothing that cannot be achieved in life; except if you do not put enough effort, passion, and commitment into achieving your dream. I have a lot of things that I want to achieve in life, but before now, I did not really have any major goals. Is it the environment, or maybe it is just the fact that I have always depended on my parents for mostly everything growing up? But still, I believed I have a very bright future ahead of me.
Undoubtedly, my parents have always been very supportive of my siblings and me. My parents specifically choose the college for me to attend and the degree for me to take. Though I did not enroll to study engineering enthusiastically while I was in college, I would eventually graduate with a bachelor’s degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering at one of the profound universities in Nigeria. Many of you probably would have heard this before and it is true; If you are not studying to become a doctor, an engineer or a lawyer; most Nigerian parents believed you would never amount to anything in life. But truly speaking, which parents would not want their children to become a doctor, an engineer, or a lawyer? It is not my parents’ beliefs that pushed me to take a major in electrical engineering, but rather the passion and interest for it. And this passion and interest would be the driving force towards achieving my set goals in life.
There was a time during my early adolescent age that I use to have a Walkman Personal Compact Disc (CD) music player. The mechanical and electrical innards of this little device never cease to amaze me. One day, I decided to connect the device directly to an electric socket because it had run out of battery. To my dismay, I heard a pop sound, then white smoke, and a burning smell. Subsequently, the CD would not work or play anymore. Standing dumbfounded, I never felt there was something sinister about what I had just done. But to me, I had satisfied my curiosity. The experience with the CD player is part of what orchestrated my interest and passion for what I have become today.
I ended up studying for my master’s degree in Applied Engineering with a concentration in Information Technology in America. I graded with flying colors, but still, my passion and interest to succeed have led me to further my career in business administration. Not everyone’s life story is this perfect, but my journey started with adversity that has yielded greater benefit because I believed and stayed committed to my interest and passion.
Over the years, I have seen myself to be a roaring success that could achieve anything I put my mind to, passionate about, and strongly believed in. I have always believed in myself. I believe I am an epitome of someone with the utmost passion to be successful, and this I have always carried strongly in my heart.
