negative body image to young girls
I entirely agree that Barbie teaches negative body image to young girls. Dolls create a lousy impression of girls on the young ones. First, Barbie is made with extra beauty that is not real, and when kids play with them, they want to be like dolls. Doll’s body shapes are not realistic, and the children always have the impression that when they grow up, they will have the same shape. After the children have grown up and realized that they are not looking the same as their Barbie, they get disappointed and demoralized.
Another problem is that on many occasions when parents select toys, they do not balance them critically (Reynolds, 1998). All children should have a real diversity if Barbie to play with to encourage a richly imaginative play life. The mistake that most parents do is that they do not provide the children with variety so that they can appreciate the diversity in life.
I also think that Barbie’s beauty is not realistic and ideal, which is unhealthy and damages the image of girls. In many interpretations, excess beauty is associated with weakness and lack of intelligence. I do not think that the best image parents can give their children about girls is that they are weak creatures. At a very early age, toys make children know that they are not intelligent, which may affect their entire social and academic life. I, therefore, think that Barbie provides kids with a bad image of girls. However, I believe children can play with Barbie or read such images under parental guide and supervision to bring out the best picture.
