Observation Techniques: Film Analysis

The film selected for this analysis is Zootopia. The film depicts important themes to people in society through the use of animal characters. The whole of the animal kingdom dwells in the city when the predators represent their savage behavior; it is the responsibility of the fox hustler and bunny cop to handle the situation. Among the primary themes present in the film include discrimination and stereotype. The setting of the film is a twinkling conurbation inhabited by anthropomorphic animals, classified into different districts, which entail Rainforest District, Little Rodentia, Tundratown, and Sahara Square (Leskosky, 2019). In an alternative world, creatures dwell on their own without human beings. These creatures have a profound antique of predator against prey being the dominant factor. With time, nevertheless, they come up with a way of coexisting. The film provides the audience with the interior outlook of Bunny’s narrative, an account of optimism for a better planet. Judy Hopps, who is the protagonist in the film, wishes to be the first rabbit police. She outdoes everyone’s anticipations and accomplishes her greatest dream. Through her narrative, she educates us more about our life with the help of her own. Even though Zootopia is perceived as a kid’s film, it appears to present a comprehensive message to children and adults regarding the risks of making a judgment based on stereotypes. At the beginning of the film, young Judy speaks about her quest to be a police in the talent show; this is despite her young age. In her quest, she wishes for an environment where every person can be anything. This city is made of various ecosystems to promote diversity and uphold the lives of all the organisms in different kingdoms (Leskosky, 2019). Basically, Judy wishes for an orderly city, where everyone can live peacefully without a problem. Later on, she graduates on top of her class from the police academy.

Nevertheless, the Zootopia Police Department Chief keeps her as a Meter Maid during the first day at work. Later in the film, it is Nick and Judy who collaborate to save the city for the transient crisis. The plot basically revolves around the life of Judy and how she related to others in society. It shows all her downfalls as well as her success. Basically, the plot of the film is significantly thicker and extensive than some people perceive it. It addresses some relevant and vital issues in contemporary society.

The scenes observed from the film involve various characters; the major one is Judy, whereby she reports on the job for the first time. In this scene, she is not allowed to work as a cop as she is given some simple tasks which are not related to her career. The other perceived scene is where she gets to work with Nick to solve a case of missing mammals; the two are summoned to work together to solve the puzzle. Nick is folk, and the two do not seem to be in good terms at first, following the fact that they are from different feeding categories.

When she arrives at work for the first time after graduating with an excellent performance from the police academy, the police boss does not seem to conform to her capacity and ability. She is discriminated simply because she is a female, tiny, and prey. This is a society where segregation based on gender is highly prevalent. Furthermore, through the character of the Zootopia Police Department Chief and other animals in the city, themes of prejudice and stereotype as prevalent. This society is majorly divided based on their eating habits. For the predators, they feel superior to the prey. On the other hand, the preys feel that they deserve a just and safe society where they can become anything they wish. This is perceived by Judy’s quest to be a police officer. The other form of stereotype and prejudice is seen in the character of Nick. When the two are required to work as a team, it is apparent that Nick feels that she is not fit or capable of working as a police. Her ability, in this case, is not weighed based on her actions but rather her appearance and gender. Also, at the beginning of the film, when Judy mentions that she wants to be a cop, she was highly criticized by both the predators and prey. Nevertheless, at the end of the firm, she proves everyone wrong by solving one of the greatest puzzles and conflicts that divided the city.

The self-perception theory is applicable in the case of Judy because she infers about her capacity to resolve that she wanted more with her life than to be a bunny. The concept of self-perception helps in explaining the importance of being determined and self-motivated to achieve various goals despite various obstacles that may come our way. Social Identity Theory depicts that a person acquires a vital source of self-esteem and pride from the affiliation they are associated with (Shrestha, 2017). This is an explanation of why the prey and predator side had various views on each side. For instance, the predators felt that they were better than the prey, and thus, they deserved the best. On the other hand, the prey believed that they were the best in the city, and hence, they deserved anything. The mindset presented by this theory can be seen as the origin of prejudice and stereotype in society.
