Organizational Structure and Power

Organizations are different depending on their objectives, size, and orientation. Moreover, various medical facilities use distinct structures to enhance their operations and deliver the needed services. An organizational structure entails how roles are divided and coordinated among the staff and groups to achieve the desired goals. Besides, medical facilities use different forms of power in their operations to exert influence on the workers and the services provided.

My company is a corporate and uses an integrated system since it entails subdivided roles. Also, the tasks are interrelated to each other. For instance, the resolution of one unique case can be referred to as a specialized physician. As such, works and workers are interdependent, share common resources, and, therefore, necessitate the application of explicit coordination to ensure efficiency and quality of healthcare (Meyer, 2016). Besides, the organization uses standardization approaches to promote the productivity of individuals, teams, and the entire organization at large. The hierarchical arrangement starts from the floor nurses advancing to the top through charge nurses, nurses’ managers, department managers, and chief nursing officer..

Types of powers in the medical industry include coercive, reward, and expert. Coercive power entails the use of force to enforce rules and even castigate staff for any failure. Reward power represents a situation where a leader provides prizes to influence performance. While expert power refers to a situation where the leaders have exceptional expertise, ability, and experience through which they exert control to other practitioners. Inherently, the exertion of power in healthcare institutions poses a significant threat to the provision of health services (Ameen, 2017). Mostly, organizations upholding doctors’ dominance obstruct the performance and productivity of practitioners in different disciplines such as housekeeping, nursing, finance, and medicine, among others.

In conclusion, the application of relevant organizational structure and efficient exertion of power is vital in the nursing and medical industry. Notably, performance and quality of care depend on the motivation of clinicians, which in turn relies on an organization’s structural landscape. Moreover, misuse of powers encourages conflicts among practitioners, which, if not addressed, reduces the efficiency of services provided.
