Patience
Patience is a very crucial factor in enabling children to be able to attain economic, social, and academic success. The efforts to encourage this behavioral trait and cognitive ability in an individual’s early life is warranted. The ability of children to be show patience in their behavior tends to predict their success they will achieve in their future. Success does not, however, occur in a straight forward manner. When a larger sample and sophisticated statistical methods are used, they tend to show that the correlation that exists between the future outcomes of an individual and patience is not very strong as earlier studies presumed. The association between success and outcomes of the future tend to disappear when confounding factors such as the demographic characteristic are controlled. To develop effective interventions, a measure for patients should be reconsidered, and other behavioral and cognitive abilities.
The term patient refers to an individual’s ability to be able to delay satisfaction. This is a factor that makes patience to be evaluated using delay tasks in which a person can pick between rewards that are immediate but smaller ones and larger ones that are delayed. This is a measure that usually excludes a lot of factors such as social trust and context, which tend to affect the decisions that a person makes. It also does not include the motivation and presentation of the reward. This task also tends to ignore when a person has to be able to wait when no compensation is tangible. This includes instances where people have to wait for their turns in line in visiting a doctor’s office. This are occurrences that are very common in the daily lives of individuals and involve social components. These is factors that show patience is more than just an individual’s ability to be able to wait for an enormous reward. Patience is, however, something that encompasses both contextual and behavioral factors. These factors tend to affect whether an individual is going to display patience.
Contextual and behavioral factors led the experimenters to develop pure waiting. This refers to the ability of children to be patient where no reward is tangible upcoming. The patient attribute in this instance was, therefore, being correlated to the performance that they display in a dealy task. This sugetsed that both tasks were meant to mneausre an primary mechanisim that is common. The children adjusted their patience through being very static or talking to themslcves less when the experimentor was there and when absent. This highlighted the imprtnace of social conxect when and indvidul is experesing their patience. This showed that pure waiting is better in ebing able to asses influence that contextual facors such as social manipulations and behavioural factors compared to the traditional task that were used to measuer dealy.
The underlying factors that were not being observed in children may have resulted into the correlations between success and patience. The iindviduals who are petianet do not show their ability to be flexible in their behavuiour when they are required. Petince also appears to be malleable than it was being assumed pervisoulsy. This is because patience can be modulkated by social contexts and the environment. There is therefore apsossbility thatpatience was being inetnalized as a social norm in chdilren and they adjust it according to the situation that they are in. It may also be apossible that the ability of a child to be able to internalize somne behaviousr as social normas is what makes them successful in future. This allows them to be flexible in changing their behaviours in every situation they find them,slevcs in.
