Patriarchy in Early Korea
The patriarchal system took over in Korea during the period of (1392-1910). Women were being deprived of their property and legal rights. They were only left at home with very little roles in society. Haboush argues that irrespective of women being in this very difficult situation, they were able to start writing and emerged to be very successful. This was made possible by the invention of the Korean Script. From the article Versions and Subversion, and the film, they both show how women were not given the opportunity to show their capabilities and irrespective of that, they still managed to be successful in their ventures. In both the article and the film, women played a significant role in the development of the Korean written culture. The article confirms the image of women’s lives in early Korea. From reading the article, we get to understand the challenges that women faced during the era when the patriarchal system was in effect, and the hardships they underwent before the end of this period.
